It's Time For A New Harness- Opinions Needed
Good afternoon All,
My '66 LeMans is going to get a new wiring harness. I'd appreciate opinions as to which. I won't be doing the work myself as I don't have a garage and wouldn't want to if I did I'm particularly interested in getting the harness that is the most complete as far as sockets, etc. and the least confusing to install. I'm familiar with Autowire and Painless and that they're the most popular but any suggestion is welcome. That's it. I'm going for a ride through the hills of Tennessee. You all have a good day. trshman |

Timely post...getting ready to do the same with my '70. Was recommended American AutowIre, but curious to see the forum's response.

Harnesses (all of 'em) for our '66 GTO from M&H were perfect

In the past two years I have replaced the Engine Harness, the A/C harness and the Dash Harness. Still working on the Dash Harness install.
I bought all the harnesses from AMES. All three are excellent. The only problems were: The Dash Harness did not come with a connector for the Ignition switch and I had to use the original one from the harness that was being replaced. No one makes ignition connectors for the 68 GTO. The A/C harness was 100% correct, but I also replaced the Blower Motor Switch and that required a special 4 prong connector. The original used a three prong connector and a single prong connector, so I had to remove the wires from the three prong and the single prong and insert them into the new four prong to work with the new switch. I also replaced the dash printed circuit board. The harnesses bought from AMES are excellent. The Dash Harness had to be made and I waited approximately 10 weeks from the date I ordered until the date I received the harness. So far no complaints. |

Harness Opinion
I used American Autowire for my 69 Firebird vert. Complete harness front to back exactly like original. All factory connections replicated exactly. Any ?s their tech service is outstanding

Sounds like both M&H and Autowire are the most popular and best respected. I may wind up flipping a coin but thank you one and all. You all have a great day.

FWIW...for a 70 GTO, American Autowire evidently does not do a conversion for HEI on their OEM engine harness, but is an included option on the Classic upgrade kit. Although the Classic kit contains all the additional wiring for upgrades like digitial dash, HEI, power option, etc, and is less expensive than purchasing separate harnesses, connectors are not installed and requires quite a bit more labor to install.
M&H will do a HEI upgrade to their OEM harness and also an internally regulated alternator conversion. Might look into them.

Another vote for an M&H - just like the original - plug & play. Easy to do on your own, but this means it'll be much cheaper to pay someone else to do it.

I've used M & H on several cars & they were always spot on.
