Default 63 GP vaccum hose identification

Still working on restoring the AC system in my 63 GP. Reinstalled the water heater control valve on the intake but I can determine which vacuum hose it should be connected to.

I have a factory chassis and AC service manual that shows various images with colors. It's supposed to connect to a hose with a purple daub on it. Most of the vac hoses seemed to have been replaced, so no colors on them.

Any suggestions to determine which hose is the correct one? Cant see anything from under the dash and I really don't want to disassemble & remove the heater control & vacuum switches if I don't have to.

Just to expand a bit on my zeal: I have the same issue with my car. The hoses get brittle and fall off, and have been replaced with hoses with no markings.

I have some functionality but also have some ports with no hoses attached. I'd like to get the A/C and defrost working but no joy so far.

I'm not looking forward to sorting out THAT rat's nest.

Phil - are their other graphics in the manual relative to this, and would you be willing to post them?

Hi Keith,

I have both chassis & AC manuals that have plenty of illustrations of the vacuum & electrical routings. I can post them if you let me know what your looking for.

I live in Brighton (US 23 & I-96 area)

My current plan to find out which hose does what is to blow air into each hose from the vacuum switch on the inside of the car and see what hose it comes out of on the engine compartment side. Might take a while but I cant think of another way right now

Thank you; based on your recommendation I'm going to walk out back and see which manuals I might already have.

What's the status of your a/c rebuild on the mechanical side? Have you completed the plumbing, recharged (R12 or 134A), did you go with factory parts or have you done some modifications?

Please let me know what you find in terms of access to the vacuum switch under the dash (ie, access from the bottom vs coming in through the radio opening, or from the top with dash pad removed).

I'm in Clarkston and work in Farmington Hills, so our paths might cross on occasion.

Based on the original picture you posted it looks like you have a factory Heater/AC manual. I don't have a 63 manual but a 62 manual I have has many illustrations showing hose colors clear back to the 5 port vacuum switches behind the dash controls. I would think your manual has the same. If you don't have them then see what balmfort can do. Or get a manual. I only have info for 61 or 62 and I don't see the vacuum controlled heater valve in those systems so I can't help with a purple daub.

And as a suggestion - when I replaced the hoses in my 61 I went to an art supply store and got felt tip paint markers in the required colors and added my own paint stripe on each hose just like the factory.. I like originality.

Keith - I reinstalled and rebuild all the components myself. Replaced the hoses, resealed the original A6 compressor, rebuild the STV (freeze protection valve), installed new dryer and replaced all o-rings. I decided to stay with R12 for refrigerant as I have access to it and after a lot of reading from this and other forums, it should be colder and leak less than 134a.

I considered having most of this done but when I was quoted $1500 -$2000 for all of this, I decided to do it myself and see how it goes.

its all mechanically reassembled now, just need to solve this vacuum hose connection issue, then evacuate the system and see if it holds vacuum, then proceed to recharge and check for leaks. Wish me luck
