Default Bolt identification

Does anyone have a good way to identify the different fasteners listed in the assembly manual? I don't own a parts book and when everything comes in bucket, it gets a bit tedious to figure it out. Seems like it would be a good resource guide for others as well.

I measured the bolt (length, thread size, pitch, size of head), take a picture of it with the description under it and then use the AMK bulk catalog.
The AMK catalog has a photo and description of every bolt they carry and has a GM part number reference for some of the bolts shown in the assembly manual.

Photo shows one of the front door window assembly bolts.

I had a bunch of bolts, screws, nuts in baggies with only some idea where they go. So I just bought the bolt kits from AMK.
So much easier, except the window mechanism bolts which are not in the kits.

What year car is this?

I have every stud, bolt, nut, washer & bracket for 1971 Pontiac 455HO engines identified by size, thread, length, part number and where it goes, from breather to oil pan & fan to bell housing, if that will help you. You can sort what applies to you and figure out what little is left.

Can help on body if you shoot a pic and post it.

Most of the bolts are identical from engine to engine with the exception of w/AC...got that too though. Result of many long winter nights figuring this $#! T out.

If you post pics I'm sure we'd get you straightened out pretty quick. Most bolts I can identify from sight.

I am actually working on a '74 right now, but this forum gets more traffic and most of the hardware is the same in the early years. I tried the AMK site and that works great. However, there is one I can't find. It is GM part number 9419969. Anyone know what that one is?

Numbers come up as a hex head, fine thread bolt (32 per in.) just under 1 1/4 " long, approx. 3/16 dia. thread. Odd for a fender bolt.

9419839 is as high as it goes for 67-76 Firebird MPC.

next number starts as 942****

Scott told you 65 F-85, I'm sure he's right.

I have found that the GM part number can apply to more than one fastener. Example would be a 1970 bolt, Identical to a 1969 bolt, but since the new body came along ( with a new decade) the number could change. Also different manufactures may have the same bolt and number, and different markings, and on the same car. Especially side to side. The mission to cut costs was always
in the backround, driving changes.
Back in the 80's we had some GM bolt trivia for sponsored prizes at car shows. That was always fun, and some controversial, but was way more popular than anyone could have guessed.
There were a few guys that were NOT Gm techs that really knew their hardware.

I use the Parts Manual more than any other, it's crucial for checking the tiniest details and components, especially when sellers don't always know what they have or in wrong box.

There's also the GM Bolts and Fasteners manuals, less useful but also has information others don't.

Easier to look up a particular assembly and see what bolts it uses than to look up a certain bolt and see where it is used.

Bolts are going to drive you crazy. But, I do have a picture of one in my example. They may be the same size, just plated different.

So, the same bolt is listed in my assembly manual under two different part numbers?

Parts change pick order is the explanation. They used 2 or more vendors for same part. Same being a exact exchange of same part.
This can be seen on some cars with 2 different head bolts in the front lower valance, as this was bolted in from both sides of the assy line,
and the assemblers had their own hardware on each side. When one side runs out, in comes a fork truck with another load of hardware which
could be either bolt, and a parts change pick order was sitting on top, which soon found the floor.

Seems confusing that they would have two part numbers for the same part, especially on an assembly line.

I am close to completing my project of cataloguing the bolts on an Excel spread sheet. There are a few that do not come up on the AMK page or show up on the internet. If anyone can identify these by part number and give me the specs along with a pic if you have one, that would be great! Not all of these are bolts as I am cataloguing the washers, nut clips and nuts as well.

496288 - nut retainer
3990160 - washer
6262212 - nut
9422046 - bolt
9433279 - bolt

Thank you!

buy a bolt at lowes, buy the same size bolt at Home Depot. Do they have the same part number? The dual number listing shows both are interchangeable.

Yes, I get that, but isn’t the part number assigned by GM? It doesn’t make sense for GM to assign two different part numbers for the same part.
