Default Proper sequence to install harmonic balancer

What is the proper sequence? Shim, pulley and then balancer? What is the purpose of the shim?

You can do it either way, makes no difference.

Doesn’t the shim go between the pulley and balancer to strengthen the stamped sheet metal pulley?

Oh it most certainly does make a difference! Younggto is correct. The shim goes under the balancer to re-enforce the pulley. Otherwise you are prone to pulley failure, and you will be inducing belt alignment problems if the shim is placed behind the pulley. Here is a picture of my original when i took it apart. It seems to have never been apart until i disassembled it.

Sorry, forgot about the balancer having to go inside the pulley.
