Default Original distributor cap question

Hey guys

I pulled this distributor cap off my 67 gto and was wondering if it’s the original. I’ve talked to some friends and we think yes. But I’ve been doing some reading on the Internet that the distributor caps with the R on the top we’re 68 and later . Anyone have a solid answer ?

Btw I’m looking for a nos cap for my 67

I see '68' stamped on the inside of the cap, is that a date code?

You could be right but I have no clue . I’ve seen all kinds of different numbers on the ones I look at on eBay

Here is a link that might explain it. Looks like yours is an original 67 cap. The r on it stands for resistor not replacement.

Default Factory Distributor Cap

The factory cap for 64-67 GTO with standard ignition “Did Not” have the “R” on top.

These caps said (Delco - Remy Patent Pending) only.

My 65 shown below still has its born with Cap and Wires.

I know of a low mileage late June 67 Survivor with this same cap.

Chris.

Does your cap have a dimple on the the window? Also is the 67 considered a tall cap ? I notice the caps without the R are called tall caps .

Default No R...

Eric, here's two photos of my original cap. The numbers molded on the inside next to the Delco Remy logo are not date related from my research.

Are you sure that's original? I thought that the terminals on a original cap would have been brass.

They did not have Brass terminals for the GTO with standard ignition.

Post #9 is the Real McCoy !

Tall DELCO caps on the GTO.

Here is one of my NOS spares in the pull string box.

Yep, I would think only performance applications got the brass/copper terminals. Very nice, Chris!
