Intake Identification
The attached aluminum intake came off a '70 ram air IV engine. The cross over has a part number and date code and it appears correct, but the intake is missing a part number and a date code. Can anyone help identify it?

Moderators should remove this thread Intake goes against anything we can fathom. Must be a proto-type for the 69 unit , that snuck out of engineering dept. |

Is there anything on that little pad between the GM3 and the 2?The factory sometimes would put a change number on there if it was a engineering piece.Tom

There are no numbers on the little pad.(see pic) There is a "3" stamped near the front.

I actually believe that is a pre-production piece. Especially with the GM 3 cast into it just like a cast iron intake. And no Winter’s logo. Even the part number blank is in an entirely different area.
A very strange piece indeed. I absolutely believe it is a GM part and not a reproduction though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The 9796395 crossover was used on 69 and 70 RAVI.

The casting quality is pretty hairy. Hairy enough for only a proto-type.
I think the cross-over with an April 1970 date/part # is just something that joined up with it later on much after the fact. Intake has been around the block several times it appears. It's a really cool piece to see Thanks for sharing it with us ! Probably deserves its own self-titled thread And see if anyone else ever discovers or has one. Where did you pick it up , and how long have you had it ? |

If the Intake Ports and Bolt Holes aren't heavily reworked - then its factory.
As in how flush a factory gasket would match up. If they have been whacked up a lot and look oddbally - I suppose there might be chance it was a proto-type for the repop job. Much cooler if it looks mostly or completely untouched in reference to ports and bolt holes. |

Its a Factory Proto-Type
For all we know - they may have even wanted this type intake on a 68 Ram2. It probably goes that far back into actual round port history / development. (that's just my own thought) The ports have had some hand tooling (some more than others) And it looks like most was done on a rookies workbench in a rush. This could have been flash removal, or gasket matching from a Ram2 Intake Port - to a Ram4 Intake port. either or both A couple bolt holes have the rookie touch too. Possibly to coax fitment with some shaved heads in the past. But its not wild enough or good enough that it was done to fit a PartsPlace Re-Pop type intake. Supposedly they take a lot of good work to be proper. Or a lot of ugly bad work, and they still look wonky on the port divider margins when its all said and done. If not epoxied or welded to get the divider margins back in tune. The thermostat gasket surface area and perimeter look nothing like the Re-Pops either. They are fatter/wider/blubbier and have a much different contour around the thermostat bolt hole zones . And it seems to have too much age/mileage/use to be very new (repop proto-type) That's my 12cents |

Someone would have to hold it in their hands and take a real mean look at it to see if it might have originally had Standard/Ram2 intake port openings.
That would be pretty F'ing awesome if it did. No matter, either way, its a neat piece of our history you have there. thanks again for sharing it with us |
