Car Show Trophies - What do you do with them?
I just found boxes of them my wife had put away. Do you just throw them away? Sell them? Is there a market for these heavy dust collectors? What?
I know that if they were old racing trophies they would be worth something, but car show trophies? What do you do with them? |

When I moved to my current house 2 years ago, I threw a good sized box of them away. They have no meaning to anyone really in my case, except me. I had one smallish POCI National plaque that was laser etched of an Indian head. It was cool so I kept it and hung that one up.

I donated some to a Trophy shop that repurposes them for underfunded kids sports teams.

That is just it. Today, I would rather have a dash plaque as a momento to reflect on where I was. |

I don't have that problem. My Firebird was never a "car show" worthy even when I rebuilt it 25 years ago.

After we'd won dozens of racing trophies, we began taking $5, instead of a trophy. I reckin that, at the time, the tracks were paying $5 or less for the trophies, so it was fine with them to give us $5 instead of a trophy.
TJ sold some of her trophies to her neighbor, for $5 each. He said he'd use 'em to impress his girl friends. We kept quite a few in a cardboard box, in the attic, for years. Just a few years ago, we threw most of 'em away. Kept some of the bigger ones. I have the biggest in my room, along with lots of old racing pics, on the wall. |

If there's not a Trophy shop nearby contact a youth league.
When I was at the shop donating mine a guy/coach walked in with a box full to have them repurposed for his kids. Said he buys them at garage sells and flea markets, or parents donate them.

Was wanting to take my car somewhere and set all of them up, take a picture, and then get rid of the trophies and plaques. So far, they'be been stashed in the trunk for months to get them out of the house. I've also taken others to a local trophy shop and donated them in the past and that's what I'll do with these.

I too have heard of people donating them. Im like hikin mike though, I dont have that problem . I do have a some antique motorcycles that I used to show a lot. I have tons of trophies from them. It got to a point that I would take them to shows and not register. I get more enjoyment out of being there and letting others look at something unique than being a trophy hunter. It is nice to get recognition though occasionally.

I donate them to special olympics for kids events. They all get a different one, makes them feel really good. They just put their own badge on them. Here’s a few on my trophy wall.

Lots of good ideas! Mine are in boxes in the attic collecting dust! I do however enjoy the dash plaques. They don't take up much room & once or twice a year I take them out to reminisce.
God Bless Bill

Our local all-make car club holds a first Friday night show every month and we have about a half dozen different contests for the kids to enter. We accept old trophies and have the local trophy shop put on a new label and they're good to hand out to the kids.

I wouldn't know..
I've never won one. I have won a couple door prizes though - generally those are really nice.

Every couple of years ,I gave them to the Boy Scout leaders to make trophies for their Pine Wood Derby.
I still go to shows now and then, but I usually don't enter unless a few buddies insist. I usually leave before it's over. The exception is Pontiac or BOP shows. |

Here at the auction business, we can't even get 50 cents for a whole box of them. When people call us and tell us they have trophies to bring in to sell we tell them not to waste the time to bring them to us.

Not my problem...
... since no value other then the recognition of the car/my work or whatever, I'll let my Daughter decide what to do with them when I'm gone
But if I were to sell it before hand then the new care taker can do with them as they wish, they are a part of this Pontiac and will remain with it while I'm still here.

If you have a strong relationship with your daughter (I certainly hope you do), then by NOT discussing the goods you leave behind, you will be putting her in a very difficult emotional position. She will be distraught at losing her Dad, then she has to decide what to do with what he treasured. I think she should have clear instructions just what to do when the inevitable time rolls around. I'll bet that she would not throw them away or even donate them out of respect to you. But what are you doing to her? Loading her up with piles of what is essentially valueless junk. They are only valuable to the recipient and rarely to anyone else. One of most peoples big failings is NOT making your wishes well known and clear to the people we leave behind. Some things need to be clearly documented as to what happens to assets in your estate, where certain items should go and who should receive them, what should be sold and where the money goes and other things such as Jeff's trophies it should be CLEARLY known within the family as to what happens to the memorabilia. A lack of CLEAR and DETAILED estate planning can very often lead to irrevocable break down within families. And who wants that....... Ian
