3" for first gen firebird?
Summit has a sale on Pypes exhaust- was thinking of ordering now to save a few bucks. My initial thought was 3" rear qtr exit and 3" Ultra Flow mufflers. I liked this combo (same 600hp/crank engine) in my Abody.
Those with an fbody... how well do the 3" pipes fit in the tunnel area? I have a 3.5" driveshaft- and am thinking things could get a little tight. 2.5" would likely work fine as well- but most folks claim a little better HP with a 3" mid at this power level. Thanks!

I have the Pypes 3" system on my '67.
I'm running Doug's headers and custom motor mounts so your application may be a little different. Cons: One of the parts at the rear was clocked wrong and had to be cut & re-welded, but that was probably just a one-off mistake. The pipes hang an inch or two lower than I like & could use an "S" bend at the front to raise them up. This may be due to the custom motor mounts that sit the engine lower than factory. Pros: Very nice looking system. Plenty of clearance once adjusted although it is a little tight at the quarter exit. I have a Tanks Inc. notched gas tank, but I don't think a factory tank would cause any trouble. The race pro mufflers sound good, but I swapped them for Dynomax turbo mufflers to tone things down a bit since most of my driving is around town. The race pros really sound off when you get on it. If I had to do it again, I would have my local shop build the system with 3" to the mufflers and then 2.5" to the quarter exit for the same price as the Pypes kit. I don't think there will be any problem with driveshaft clearance. Here's a few pics -

Thanks for the note. Regarding your comment of having custom pipes bent for the same price as Pypes kit... I really need to find a cheaper shop!! Local guy I use does great work, but hard to get out the door for anything less than $1k!!

Speargun the other thing you didn’t mention is you have a notched tank he can’t run his pipes like you did. Also I just changed my system from 3” with reducing cones at the mufflers 2.5 mufflers and tailpipes to 3” out the back only mod I had to make was cut 1.5” off the end of both 3” tailpipes. I think it’s going to pick the car up 1-2 tenths and a couple mph.

I should mention that I also plan to run the Tanks Inc. Or Aeromotive tank with notched corners. I like the Aeromotive tank, but not sure it is worth the $200 premium over Tanks with same pump.

Do they still make that oval pipe? I cant remember who made it. That'll help with clearance. I guess if your really good you can do they whole thing in oval!

Got the 3" in today. Used the Flowmaster qtr exit kit with H pipe. Installed with 14" Dynomax ultraflows. A little snug but fit well. Ultimately I would have liked 2.5" tail pipes. Sound clip...

On my 69 firebird, I run Dougs headers with 3" Pypes X middle, Ultraflow and Flow master 3" over rear behind tires, tight fit but it sounds good with my 455.
