Default Speedometer integrated 'brake' light 67 GTO

I recently had engine work done at a local shop. Involved removing the engine. Replaced every gasket and seal.

All back together and running well... but have a question...

The 'brake' light in the speedometer illuminates when using the main brake. I thought it used to only light up when the emergency (parking) brake was engaged...

But I'm not certain.

I think that brake light lights up when you’re low on fluid.

Low fluid with a leak. Works on a pressure differential between front and rear brakes. If one side is leaking, the pressures will be unequal. The distribution valve/switch will activate illuminating the brake light whenever you step on the brake

If your really smart about checking the brake fluid do what I did and cut a hole in the hood to check then you don’t even have to open the hood .

Now that's funny! I'm assuming that's the hole for a tachometer?

One of the master cylinder bowls was full but the other was only half. I added fluid and seemed to solve the problem on first run test.

But where did the fluid go?

Is it possible when they removed the engine some fluid was lost and they didn't top-off after work was done?

The plunger in the proportioning valve is connected to both front and back systems, and if one system starts to fail the plunger will be pushed in that direction and its contacts will trigger the brake light. The mechanics could have damaged a line or fitting while moving the engine around, but it might also just be coincidence that there is a leak at one of the wheels. Should be some tell-tale fluid on the ground or running down one of the inner tire sidewalls if it is leaking.
