Default Whine from 4 speed

I have a 76 TA with a 4 speed (it looks like it a Borg Warner super T-10) it has 9 bolts on the side cover. It has a whine in first, second and third and goes away in forth. I am told this might be a pilot bearing, how hard is this to get to and replace? Does anyone know where I can get a real good breakdown of this tranmission? What else could cause this and how difficult to fix? I was also told that I need to flush the transmission because this car has about 80,000 miles on it and sits in the garage alot.

My 79 whines in 1&2, & a little in third. 41K mile car. Pretty sure the T10's
make a little noise. How bad is it?

My 75 ta had that problem, and it was my bearings. For your car it is most likely the front bearing in the trans, and possibly the rear one too. In 1st,2nd, and 3rd gears there is more pressure on the bearings - thus the whine. In 4th gear it is direct drive (1:1 with no gear reduction/multiplication), so there is less pressure on the bearings and that is why the noise goes away. I've only rebuilt a couple of 5spd's out of mustangs and camaros so I'm not totally sure, but I believe either the bearing or the bearing race in pressed in so you would probably have to partially dissassemble/rebuild the trans-but don't quote me on that. A good rebuild kit should fix it if you have the money. Good luck with it.
