Default 1974-6 Header/Nose emblem

So, I was at MCACN this weekend and I was asked a question I couldn't answer. In fact, I never realized there was a difference.

When did the emblem change from the solid backing, to the backing that is cut out around the bottom of the top feathers? All of my '74s (last one is Feb. '74 build) have the solid backing.

Mike, thanks for the link to this thread; I hadn’t seen it yet.

So, I checked my originals and you are correct that both front and rear have the solid backing.

Front emblem is on top in photos below

Here are photos of the repro emblems

Front (Note that it does not have the solid backing)

Bag that the front came in

Rear (Note that it has the solid backing)

Sorry, didn’t keep the bag.

It would be the later '74-6 unit.

It has a 1 for the mold number, most I've seen in that design have a 2.

02C build date 74 Formula.
Appears to be the original emblem.
The other pic is too grainy to see the detail- it’s my ‘76 T/A w/ a GM emblem that I purchased in ‘90/‘91- I remember it being totally separated. In fact, the ‘74 looked odd to me w/ the casting between the wings and tail.

HFR The red 74 SD (01A) build had the closed style and was a very untouched car (AKA rough project untouched car) and the new Blue 74 SD (01B) original car in storage since the 80s had the open style bird? Original paint and no sign of anything being messed with on either car.

BJ, did I ever ask you if you had to ream the lower hole on the header panel to get the emblem to sit flush?

I have a very late 1974 T/A 455 automatic. I bought it almost 30 years ago from the original NC owner. The cowl tag shows the production date is 06C. It has the open style emblem like the one ladytata shows in her post.

I think I bought a couple of NOS emblems around 1990 or so. Would these be the open (late) style or the early style?

It would be the later style. They were selling the later style in the early 80's as the PN didn't change.

Don’t think so MIke. I’ll have to ask MPR, he is the one who installed it. I seem to recall that he had an issue with one of the two.
