Default Float Setting Question

I'm running a '74 Buick q-jet on my GP. Regarding float setting: rebuild instructions say 15/32" (nearly 1/2"), Cliff's book says 8/32" (1/4"), and I've seen other sources say 12/32" (3/8") for later style float carbs. This is a pretty wide range.

Any recommendations/suggestions?

1974 Buick 350 uses 15/32", 1974 Buick 455 uses 13/32".
Pontiac 455 SD Q-jets uses 13/32".
Float settings are related to fuel pump outlet pressure and to fuel inlet valve orifice.
Service specs for 1974 Buick fuel pumps are 4 1/4- 5 3/4 psi.
Service specs for 1974 Pontiac fuel pumps are 5-6 1/2 psi.
Fuel inlet valves are the same size for 1974 Buick and Pontiac.
I´m using 13/32" float setting in my highly modified 1972 Buick 455 Q-jet.
If you´re experiencing some off-idle surge, and your main jetting is fine, you may try a slightly higher float setting 9/32" first, if this doesn´t help the situation you may try richer primary rods.
Hope this helps some....

I really appreciate the info, thanks.

The float was set really, really low, and so I moved it up to 1/4". I'm seeing some wetness on the front of the carb now, particularly near the front, and so I figured that 1/4" was probably too high. The car runs fine that way (better than it did before), but I think I will move it back down to 13/32". It's a modified carb, and I'm no longer running a stock fuel pump, either. I'm fairly certain that the rod/jet and rod combo are correct for my combo.

13/32" works great, thanks.
