Default Power steering filters

Does anyone run a power steering system filter, and are they considered necessary??

Yes I have a filter. It came in my hydroboost kit so I used it. It’s just a little inline filter. I think it’s way more important with hydroboost than regular systems.

I have decided to use one this time. Goes in the 3/8 tube on the return line. Seems like cheap insurance. MasterPro Part # 991-FLT1 from O'Riely Auto.

Yes, I use the one mentioned above, fits inside the return line & filters the fluid, can be pulled & cleaned as its just a plastic type screen. There are other canister types that need to be installed inline but these are stealthy & cant be seen.

GM never used a PS filter in these cars but it cant hurt, I use it on new systems as well as when using used pumps/gears flushing new fluid through.

Northstar Cadillacs from the 90's had PS filters as factory installed items. They had 3/8" hose nipples like the 60's Pontiac fuel filters and were installed on the return line. I have one on my '66 GTO.

Googling that filter today I'm unable to find the original AC-Delco part number. Maybe someone smarter than me can find it.

I’ve had this one since 1990, it’s made by AC Delco..

I bought it from Lee Power Steering when I was picking up my 12.7:1 box they built off of my 1964 unit.

That one looks different than the Cadillac Northstar version. Can you deduce the part number of it?

Looking a bit further, I found the Cadillac one: PF2189. I mis-remembered the configuration of it, however. It's got a 3/8" inverted flare or O-ring fitting on one end and 3/8" hose on the other.

Got some better pictures.

PF-883

Searching for this filter shows that it’s been long discontinued, however there may be a transmission filter that’s equivalent, TFK-85953 from CarQuest. It’s nylon material not a steel can like the AC part unfortunately.

We have used these forever when installing a new transmission. We didn't take them out after just one oil change though.

I'd think these would work well with P/S. Unless there is some chemical reaction with P/S fluid instead of transmission oil.

While back I had a customer want a coolant filter added. Called the company and the tech person informed me the filter I'd chosen was for green coolant not extended life. Filter had an additive pill inside that wouldn't play well with the extended life coolant according to the tech guy.
