For items like grills and various plastic trim pieces what is the best method to rechrome the edges?

Many of the chrome plated plastic exterior parts were selectively chrome plated. The areas where there is black or argent paint have an undercoat called resist that prevented that area from being plated. This was done for paint adhesion, paint doesn’t like to adhere to chrome, especially if it is more than 8 hours old. Getting plastic parts re-chromed requires copper, nickel, and chrome plating baths. Selective plating would also require applying the resist coat beforehand. This is all quite involved and something you can’t do at home. Find a restoration expert or sand and paint the whole part. Many of the interior parts do not have chrome plating, they were vacuum metalized with aluminum or sputter coated with chrome. Again something that is not done at home.
