put that car back to as raced conditon and document as much of the history as you can with pics, the log books ect. it's a cool piece of history.
there are plenty of birds out there hot rodded and numbers restored but very few true, documented race cars. mike

silverbird
Its great to know the old warrior is still around. Actually a distant cousin of mine in California built the Silverbird for/with Herb Adams in my cousins garage. When they got to Road America with it I had only known about it for a short time so naturally I went there to meet my cuz and take pictures. We were in the paddock area and got to meet Herb briefly but the prize of the day was that their pr guy gave me the complete pr package including all b/w photos , appliance wheel stickers, schedule, crew and driver profiles etc. Well I knew that someday they might come in handy so I put them in a plastic bag and stuck them on my bookshelf. Thats where they are now. Lets talk more. Congratulations it was an awesome car and can be again.

I have had a few delays on the car (no job hasen't helped) but i hope to have some new pics on the progress very soon. I am looking for some Autometer Sport-Comp gauges I need a volt meter, fuel (gm style), and a mech speedo 2 5/8 size if anyone has some so i can get the dash together.

Pretty neat. Been around 2 T/A SCCA racers. One was a round-port with TH400, the other a ram III400/4-speed. Both took the turns "as if on rails". .
Yea, even a 70 Camaro has the Herb Adams stuff. These 3 cars were tops in their catagory. The Camaro was that yellow of yours. |

Amazing, fantastic find. In parts alone, worth way more than you paid. You could piece it and double your money (don't)..... It really is the score of a lifetime, good for you. Do everything you can to keep it, sell some parts, or the engine if you have to, keep the car at all costs. Yeah, do it as it was set up for racing. I would reconsider the Ford rear. A disc Poncho rear is more appropriate, and it retains it's history that way. You really did extremely well on this, I am truly in awe of this one. You would have a crowd gathering car at ANY show you bring it to. Put all the race decals on it, do it like it raced yesterday. I would do it as close to the original as possible, even leave the drivers name on it...... Very happy for you, and glad someone who understands the importance of this car found it. A thousand atta boys to ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS, you giving the $3000 was really a class act thing and the right thing also. You'll get that back in karma, absolutely........ PPS, this is my new favorite thread yet on this site, I am smiling just thinking about it. |

Quote: "I would reconsider the Ford rear. A disc Poncho rear is more appropriate, and it retains it's history that way." Are you saying to replace the correct Ford rear housing used by Herb Adams in his race cars with a factory "run of the mill" stock Trans Am GM rear that the car presently has? The 8.5 rear would have never lasted in competition or been allowed with the "C-Clip axle retention. Tom V.

High unsprung weight is a road racer's enemy, I'd put c-clip eliminators in and keep the 8.5". 9" weighs a lot more and it'd make the rear end jumpy and slow the car's response time down. Not as big a deal on large, high speed, smooth tracks, but on a more twisty track or the usual soloII tracks (read: coned off parking lots) that requires quick changes of direction it won't respond as well.
Very cool car, and an absolute steal for 3k. I'd have snagged it in a second as it'd save me all the road racing setup work I've been putting into my car... |

Here are some pics of the motor which is now in the car. I will start getting the fenders on as soon as i get them back to the painter.
I will be using the 3:42 disc 10 bolt rear that i got with the car for now

bobzdar, c-clip eliminators are absolutely inappropriate for a car that will turn corners; they will fail.
but before they fail, they'll leak all over the brakes. c-clip eliminators are ONLY for drag racing use; they should never ever be used on a corner-carver.

wouldn't the rear disc assemblys do basically the same job as the c-clip eleminators as far as retaining the axles??

gtowagon, yes, more or less - but still pretty dicey as a safety issue and highly not recommmended.
