Default Spectra fuel tank sender review

The 81 TA the sender went out and had a slight rusty tank so got a new SS tank and a Spectra sender unit. Tank was identical, sender had a cheesy plastic resistor instead of metal and a different float , Sticks up higher on the tank so had ti use some thicker rubber cushions to clear the floorboards and the pickup had an all plastic "sock" I took off and noticed it is almost 1" higher that a NOS factory sender I have.It is right on for empty and after putting 4 gallons of non Ethanol gas(Buccee's rest stops here sells it) it was a click over 1/8 tank on the gauge. BUT sucking out gas with my electric pump I have for pumping out bad gas I could only pull out 1 gallon and gauge was still close to 1/8 tank and no gas getting picked up!

Thanks for the review, and the warning.

It sounds like the pickup tube needs to be bent downward to match the original one to be able to use all (or most of) the gas in the tank. Probably the float height needs adjusting to match the original too. So, obviously the replacement is not very faithful to the original.

I haven't had to buy a new one yet. When mine stopped working, I took it apart at the top and found corrosion between the top plate, screw, and slider rheostat thing. I cleaned the parts up, and reassembled. I believe I used Marine Tex epoxy putty to seal it. It's been working fine for a couple years.

The bend is about the same in the tank portion just too short.

Maybe weld or braze on an extension?

Ordered one from Ames looks much more like factory in resistor and length of pickup tube. Still about 1/4" taller on top of the tank in the 3/8 line.
