Default Exhaust for '68 Bird

All,

I am in need of a new exhaust system, to include manifolds/headers, as my exhaust pipes were rusty, broken and in desperate need of replacing.
My 400 engine has been refreshed (nothing crazy), and I need everything from the manifolds on back...I would like it to sound good without waking the neighbors.

Was looking at RARE manifolds but with everything I need, that's like $1100+ plus shipping.
Doug's headers might be a good way to go (don't want to worry about re-tightening bolts all the time) but would like some help on what is good but won't break the bank.
Also, I know a lot of folks on here have different exhaust systems but I would like some help deciding that too.

- what type of manifolds/headers?
- which exhaust system?

Lots of personal preference when it comes to exhaust and mufflers. I advocate for cast iron manifolds on street cars, but full length headers are fairly easy on the 1st gen f bodies, especially with an auto trans.

Lots of options out there... i used hedman 1.75" headers on my 68, and had them ceramic coated. My manual steering Pittman arm for a manual steer car and had to be replaced with a curved Pittman arm (these are the kinds of issues you run into with headers). I am a big fan of the remflex gaskets, which stay sealed all summer while running the car on the drag strip.

I am also a fan of Dynomax mufflers. Since the kits did not offer the dynommax, i bought the flowmaster kit with H (no mufflers) to connect to headers and exit in front of rear wheels (qtr exit). I used the ultraflow but if you want something farily quiet I would use the super turbo muffler.

Thx for the info.

I was looking at the Hedman Hedders too but I would have to find a shop to coat them. Besides RARE, Ames had some manifolds for about $580 but again I need to have them coated.

I would like to go with dual mufflers instead of the transverse muffler. I had Flowmaster mufflers on my '94 Formula and I liked how it sounded.

Get some manifolds and just paint them with Eastwood hi temp cast iron spray paint. Did mine a while ago and still looks great.

I would use the Long Branch manifolds with a pair of Dynomax 17749 Turbo mufflers. No X or H pipe needed... It will sound fantastic!!! A sound better and better the more miles you put on them. Those Super Turbos are the only muffler I know of that sound better and better as they get older..

Well, it sounds like manifolds are the way to go!
Coincidentally, I've been using Eastwood paint the last few weeks on my transmission, differential and axle housing so this should be pretty easy.

It also seems the Dynomax mufflers are something to look into.

Which one sounds better...the super turbo or the Ultra Flow?

But I'm liking the price of the Hedman Hedders!
