Got another one for your collection Don. Way to go.

I need to ask, where you the guy that stopped and talked to me at the car show in Sidney last month? I am sure that I saw your car there. If so, sorry that I didn't put a name to the face.

well I've had a little progress on the 65 I've been cleaning up the underside gas tanks out and the bottom trunk pan is cleaned up as well as the floor pans in front of the rear.
Have the front suspention out as well replacing a arm bushings sway bar links and so on leaving original balls and tierods as they are fine . once the front end is back together we'll be dropping the rear out and cleaning up the area abve that and the control arms and go through the rear it self.Even thought this is an original trip car I'm just doing it for a driver play car no trailer queens in our garages .
This car is a pleasure to work on being from the north east it's been a l o n g time since I've worked on a car with a body as nice as this .Basicly I've just had to take the S.C. red mud off the pans and some surface rust on the orginal gas and brake lines .
Take notice of the original factory run on the one floor brace . I know that would drive some of you guys nuts but that's what was under neath the road dirt and tar original factory black paint with runs in it and they are staying ; < ) from time to time I'll post more but as you guys know it's slow going .

Hey JB ,Thanks ,
I told you this one was for me . all I can say is I'm glad you kept this 65 tucked away in your garage the past 16 years or I wouldn't have had as nice a car as this to work on .This will be one of the GTOs we'll be keeping . I have been hinting to mama that we need to add some more garage space . I think if that is going to happen I'm going to have to make some promises .I already promesd her no more " new " projects but she just laughed .

Well I have actually been puttering on the 65 again and Mama for the first time ever in 35 years bought me some parts for one of my GTOs . She bought me a set of weather seals which included the roof window seals the door seals quarter window seals and the seals for the front part of the quarter door post pocket trunk seal and cowl seal that about does the whole car.I bought a set of outside door handles the stainless is about polished front fenders dr door and hood are in primer the rest of the car is bare metal underside is done new bushings in the a arms brakes wheel cylinders shocks . I have a new stock original style exhaust system gas tank has been done as well as the straps drive shaft new u joints just about all is ready for the body to be finished and painted then just put it back together.my goal now is to get it done for the March Syracuse Show. I decided to go with the base 428 block and after talking with Jim OMT go with the cam I have been using in my other GTOs the past 30 years .the base 428 will be wrapped in all the 65 correct pieces including a date correct Tri Power with the original correct part number tags for a stick. Ok now you guys can razz on me I had a set of vintage M/T covers . I've got those all buffed up and detailed to use on top. That will be the only brake though from the stock appearance.

Mrs Santa also gave me a much needed electric winch for my trailer .That will be a nice addition .

I cleaned up the firewall taday taking care not to destroy any marking that may have been there. the only one I found was the one pictured below no date stamp or anything else.

Ok - Pontiac Michigan. That means I have a theory about the "5" stamp:

You probably already know that the Pontiac plant had an "accumulator" between the Fisher body portion and the main assembly plant. There were 8 staging lanes that the bodies could be place in (plus the aisleway), and then were pulled from based (loosely) on first in/first out, material availability, option content, etc.

I wonder if the "5" stamp indicates your body was placed in row 5 until it was pulled and placed on the final line.

- OR - it could simply be an inspection stamp from the trim line, and that particular inspector was coded number 5.

My guess(es) -

K

getting closer this was an easy car and should have been done a year ago but ....

working on the rear quarters decided to put on the lower patch panels .It had been hit at one time on the outside left rear. so I sectioned in a v shape piece ahead of the fender extension to get a good body line back then trimmed that to meet the repair panel.I also had to straighten the outer lip of the wheel house extension up near the tail panel . I'll smooth it out some more put some seam sealer on and with the trunk spackle paint it will be as good as new. I glued the the r p in two places along the wheel house lip and along the bottom of the wheel house extension . If you look at the trunk shot you can see where the panel adhesive oozed out to make a good bond and seal . I then migged in the butt joint and skimmed both sides with all metal or similar type product to sandwich the seam and prevent any moisture penetration .
