Trunk paint choice
Looking to order some trunk paint soon. Ames trunk paint or The Parts Place? Or are they both the same stuff? Also, anyone know what size tip you need in the gun to shoot this stuff? Ames sells a gun for $45 - should i just buy that one, or is there a Harbor Freight equilivent for half the price?

Zolatone Scroll down to the end......I used the same stuff he did and it was 100X better than anything else I ever used in both looks and durability. I used a large tip cheap gun from Harbor Freight. |

That looked good. I used the splatter from The Parts Place and tried spraying in my primer gun. It quit spraying almost immediately. I ended up brushing it on with fair results.

Last year I tried to get some of the black/aqua Zolatone and was told it's been discontinued by the manufacturer.
Check with these people to confirm, but it's not listed. https://tcpglobal.com/collections/sp...SAAEgKmVPD_BwE |

Heard a lot of good things about Guru. Maybe it was here.
Haven't tried it yet but plan to in the next few months. http://thorntonmusclecars.com/produc...-spatter-paint

If Thornton's is selling and using it, I would trust it. They helped me out with a very rare W-30 project long ago.

Dont know what is correct for your car, but I used an aqua splatter mix in my 77 'bird. Matched the original pretty darn close. I got it from Eastwood, I believe they have a couple of different shades. Also need to put a satin clear coat over the top.

Thanks for all the replies. Definitely not wanting any of the sprays that need the satin over top. That Guru looks intriguing. I may go that route... plus won't need to figure out what gun i need.

Let us know how the Guru works out .... I'll be needing trunk paint soon. Same here, not wanting anything that is water based and I can't find the Black/Aqua Zolatone in stock.

I've never liked anything out of the rattle cans because it seems the specs, especially the greens in the black/aqua you're looking for, were very large in the factory splatter, and come out way too small in the rattle cans and don't look correct. Rattle cans just don't have a large enough tip to support the correct size of the specs. On original splatter paint, those green specs are very large and in some cases come out as long slivers if you've ever looked at survivor cars.
I've always used Zolatone with a big tip gun and get very similar to factory appearance results. Been about a year since I've had to use the black/aqua mixture but was available from my local paint supplier at that time. Next time I'm in there I'll check. |

Formula - could you be more specific about the gun? What size tip? HVLP or siphon feed?

Zolatone black/aqua is part number ZT-20-TS02 I see some places listing it, other places saying it is no longer produced.

Best pic I could get in the situation. This is the aqua from eastwood. It matched really close with the original. |

PP-20-TS02 Yep, I'm seeing that part number on Ebay but not on the PP website.

All right, what kind of gun and tip do you need to spray this with?
