choke diagram?
finally figured out that when the car came back with ALL (ok, most) of the leaks gone, it is super hard to start cold. thought it was a kinked fuel hose btwn the line and pump, which might contribute - have pic if interested - but tried starting with choke closed, fired right up . turns out it's not connected so was wondering if anyone has a diagram of this - non electric type- for stock rochester qjet that came on car - 70 gto conv. 4 spd.
After 10 years, marriage, 3 kids, time to start putting this thing back together. THANKS!!!! JZ |

The 70s models use a thermostatic choke stove ( heat sensivtive coil spring) and a rod that kicks the choke closed when the motor is cold.
The choke stove mounts on top of the intake manifold exhaust crossover on the passenger side of the carb. Do you have the stove and the rod? Alot of times the rod is missing, but you can make one up from a coat hanger. You just need to file a little groove on each side of the rod where is hooks to the choke linkage so you can apply a rod clip to hold it there, the stove end does not need or use a clip if the rod is bent right. Proper adjustment of the choke is as follows. When you pump the gas to prime the motor and set the choke, the choke should close all the way. Once the motor fiires up the choke pull off should open the choke 1/16 to 1/8 inch to allow the motor to come up to high idle.

thanks steve,
(this may show up twice - just getting used to the forum) I think the parts are all there, looks like i just need to connect the rod to the linkage somewhere and install the clip. just need to find out where now - looks like it could go a few places. also it feels line the rod is loose in the stove end, should it have a little tension on it? i'll dig in again after work, maybe send a shot or two for reference. thanks again |

Time for you to buy a genuine GM service manual.
Readily available reproductions on eBay or from a dozen different vendors. |

the need of a service manual notwithstanding, this is where i'm at with the choke. turns out there is some tension on the rod, feels like the spring is still attached so i haven't opened the stove. yet. so which hole should the rod pop into - top, middle , bottom? or is there another missing connection here....
thanks again. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. Edmund Burke |

Here is a generic choke system drawing.
You are missing the vacuum break rod that controls the air valve on the secondaries. Charles |

According to Cliff's book, that carb. is for a 1970 Pontiac with a manual transmission. I think you need the letters to identify it more than that.

!!!!!!
kind of strange, caught the bug about 25 yrs ago w/ first car, a 67 ht. did that one all over, then moved on to this one. then started doing old houses over, dragged the 70 vert to 3 dif locations, marriage, kids, dogs.... now i have a 9 yr old little girl looking at me wondering when she's going to get a ride in the old car w/ no roof. as i try to get my jaw off the floor, it strikes me strange that it took that to get me rolling again. now if i can get her to stop asking if i'm done yet... |
