1965 GTO w/1968 Pontiac 400 drag car
Was running just a standard AC Delco PF 24 but wanted to upgrade to a racing oil filter I thought a WIX 51069R would fit but the diameter of the gasket seal is to wide. Any recommendations? |

If it helps the PF-24 filter is similar in size to the WIX 51258 filter.

Any good filtration system must also take flow into consideration to determine an optimum balance. For example, a 45-micron filter is recommended for most lubrication applications, and 35 Micron for lighter weight oils —however thicker 50, 60, 70-weight viscosity racing oils can clog it. For these ultra high-powered engines using thick oil a 75-micron filter is recommended. .

Here it is. Plug your stock adapters by pass and buy this filter with a by pass, done. K&P
Far and away exceeds the stock filters flow rate and micron capability . And you can easily take apart, inspect, clean and reuse. Race engines need oil filter inspection. https://kandpengineering.com/product/S16/ Stock type filters I have always run the Wix 1049. Its the filter for 60s big cars. Its longer than the part number for say a 69 GTO. That it why I used them. Barely fit with my headers, but fit. |

I'm not a fan of cleanable oil filters. I don't own a ultrasonic cleaning tank, nor do I have a microscope with which to inspect the filter element after cleaning.
Flushing and blowing air through a filter mesh will remove most of the particular debris but not all and after each cleaning there will be more particular matter not completely removed. Which is fine as long as you run a differential pressure guage across the filter element and do filter cleaning based on the pressure differential and not on miles driven or passes made.

And the flow rate/ lack of pressure drop is incredible. Much, much higher flow rate. They are FFA approved, lives depend on them. |

We've been running Canton filters since 1996 and we've not found anything better. Plus we like to support long time vendors of Pontiac racing parts.

I bought a trick Steffs for 850$ and Canton not only wanted 5 race pans minimum but wanted over 1000$ each for them. AND they wanted pics from me to build it. They lost the info and had not made one in over 10 years. So I am not too high on Canton these days. They made some nice pans in the past but apparently do not have the info to build one today. |

The Fram HP Racing series was recommended to me by a long time fellow pontiac racer and engine guy. After some research, I started using them a couple seasons ago on my ~600hp street/strip engine. Just refreshed motor this winter and bearings looked like new- same experience he had after many years on the same motor.
This is not to say the bearings would have not looked the same given any other name brand filter... but I do like the HP feature of a screened bypass valve. You still have the benefit of the bypass (if factory is eliminated), which will at least keep any big chunks out if needed. With that said, I do feel many of these things just make us owners feel better, and the average hobbiest engine does not really care. ![]() Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

The different sizes are noted in the link. Not a recommendation. But fwiw, many years ago when racing we used a HP2 racing filter. And as research found, at lease back then, their racing filter is a different construction than the regular off the shelf Fram filter. .

I used the HP2 with no problem. Again, this was years ago. Now today do we make the assumption that the Fram HP filters are of the same low quality as a regular Fram filter ? I have no clue on that subject.
No matter what brand there will ALWAYS be complaints when oil filters are discussed ![]() .

Well. I thought I would buy a HP2 and cut it apart and look at their construction. They are not being made anymore and you can not find them.
K&N makes a cross reference but has no by pass. Wix make a cross reference, 51049. I ran the 1049 for years. Anyone know what the 5 stands for ? Does it have a built in by pass ? That info is not on WIXs website that I found anyway. |
