I have never seen one of those on a '70
At least not on a factory original 1970 (known at the time as "1970+") Firebird. My suspicion is that this was a 1969 late model year part (meaning 1969 model built during the first half of the 1970 model year; eg: Sept 1969 through to December 1969).

That is a 70 mirror piece. But mine wasn't plain metal, I don't think?
Been about 30 years since i have seen it. I also thought they used that through the whole year? (1970) The back of the mirror is chrome look. ![]()

This was the one on my 70 that I had restored. If you have a 70-73 parts book there is a 1st design, then a second design. Here are all the part numbers for the first design.
Group 10.187 9825121 cast aluminum ball. Stuck to windshield. Then, Arm, mirror support 2 piece: 9816721 and 9816722 use with cast aluminum ball. Group 10.185 911261 mirror assembly. Group 10.187 70 All F screw 9809937 Qt 2 This first design was used until around the end of May of 70. The second design shows up in the later 70 parts book. The 1st design mirror and hardware parts were still available from GM to around 1978. So I have an nos mirror 911261 and cast aluminum ball 9825121. I need the 2 supports. The GM part number for the second design, the common one is 911582 in Gr 10.185. |

Most 70 F Bodies had their rear view mirrors changed buy the time any us us were buying them. Even in the mid 70s. It was a poor design, It was known to sag. You could only tighten the screws so much then it would not stay up.
So, you go to the dealer and buy the second design, that's why you don't see the 1st design around anymore. |

Yep, mine is a Feb car. It started sagging just before I made it a racecar.
I used some paper to shim the ball and it holds for a while. Then the glue came undone and a real pain to get the mount stuck on window with the whole weight of the mirror. I can't remember if i have extra or not. Probably won't be until next summer before I'm back there. ![]()

i remember the rearview mirror sag VERY well, drove me crazy in the late 70s...i tried the shimming technique as well w/paper, cardboard maybe, etc....i think i finally used string attached to the headliner trim then wrapped around the mirror to try & hold it up...looked ugly but at least i could see behind me when i needed to :-)

More info on the 1st design. Maybe someone can save the photos in case it disappears.
