Not real, started life as a 6 cylinder car too.
I still wouldn't kick it out of my garage for dripping oil - better than most.

VIN (22367) confirms it's a convertible, but where's the top up/down switch? It should be just to the right of the wiper/washer rocker switch. Great looking car.

I never even thought of that, I wonder if any of the 8 T/A's came with a manual top, guess it's very doubtful any did.

Yup, its a 6 cylinder VIN.
The steering wheel center cap looks like the one I used from a 73 TA, the 69's were wing down. Nice car to drive for sure. |

Last one came up at a Mecum Auction last year: no sale @ 1.3 million.
Owner had a 1.6 reserve on it! |

They were available, just 8 were ordered that way. (like no one ordered a 1970 RA IV Formula)

In the late 80's or very early 90's, 1 of them sold for 100k or 150k - and it was considered landmark money.

Baron, "In the late 80's or very early 90's, 1 of them sold for 100k or 150k - and it was considered landmark money".
It was sold in late 90's and sold for 125K from a Conn. owner to a PA. owner, which was later sold for 1.3M around 2006.

Absolutely available to the public, it's just that only a few were ordered. Not many people understood the Trans Am option to begin with. The Judge was a "stickers and wing" car, the Trans Am was a complete performance package, but unless the buyer knew what all the special parts were about on the Trans Am, the T/A seemed like a very expensive "Firebird Judge". That was one of the reasons first year sales were dismal, the car was misunderstood.
Another reason was price. A ragtop 69 T/A with auto trans easily topped $4,600 with very few options. If someone were to order air conditioning, AM/FM Stereo, tape deck, power windows, and a couple more convenience options, the car would easily be over $5,400. In comparison, a 69 GTO ragtop, with a RAIII, and similarly equipped options, was around $5,200. So it's no surprise that no one opted for a RAIV convertible Trans Am. If an executive decided to load up a 69 Trans Am convertible with every available option, the car could have topped $6,000.

My info was second hand actually.
When Marty McD owned the 1 with white interior, it wasn't long before he was in position to resale. He appraised its value going by a fairly recent prior sale of another one back at that time (possibly involving Reggie NY Jackson - seems like). He considered his would bring that same type money. About 90 or 91 when i saw that car and we talked about it. That was Tall Tall Green in car money back then. And that was getting close towards the bubble-pop of that uprising era. In 92 it was weakening. In 93 it was softening fast. We lost touch and i don't know when he actually sold it or for how much. He was pretty sharp on early Birds and 69 TA's. One had to have sold back around then. Telly would have to lay the smack on us to be sure though. I'm just amazed how they ten-folded in 15 years. Didn't realize almost the full grunt of that happened just in the last uprising. WoW 180k down to 125k -then boom 1.3 milli |
