77 TA 400 into 82 Silverado
The older threads on here for similar swap have bad links.
My first concern is mounts. I've heard rumors that there are factory parts that are pretty much bolt in. Any truth to this? |

I remember my father speaking of using the stock big mounts.. a bolt in deal. He once did a 74 TA engine into 80’s K2500 Suburban.

My '83 'Bandit' Suburban (built by Jim Wangers) is a Silverado 3/4 ton, with a Pontiac 455 HO. I don't know the details, but the mounts appear to be stock pieces, with a 3/4" thick piece of aluminum plate added. Dave Anderson ('Big Injun' on these forums) would know.

The tall steel block mounts and the Chevy frame mounts will work. I used a adapter plat to mount the Chevy trans to the Pontiac block, that way the trans would go in the stock location. Also had to slide the frame plates back and drill a couple holes. What I did is bolt every thing to the block and set the entire engine trans in place with trans set in original mount location. My truck is a 81 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive 350 turbo 400. I used a bare block for test fitting.

Thanks to all so far.
I won't have a 70-later bareblock for trial fitting, and was hoping to leave trans in place when this project happens. I'm not even sure the engine still has mounts, as it's buried in Padgett's garage in Orlando about 400 miles from where we now live. But I now have better questions! |
