IF there is any of you out there who have succesfully changed out a stock super t-10 4 speed out for a 5 speed, I would like to know any and all details on the swap. ie, which 5 speed works best, what mods have to be done to your car, etc etc. I have a 1976 Trans AM that is an original 4 speed. I am currently doing a frame off resto on it, and would like to explore the options of going to a 5 speed. Thanks, Steve

Easiast swap is Nash-Richmond 5 speed. Near bolt in for '71-74 Muncie or 2nd design T-10. That said, don't like the Richmond at least with a new Hurst shifter, very notchy shifting. Never drove one with a Long shifter though.

I had a Nash 5 in my '64 GTO. It shifted quite nice with the Long shifter. Swapping in the Nash (Richmond) 5 was an easy straight-foreward swap. I took it out and installed a TH400 when I made a bracket race car out of the '64.

Only one problem with the Richmond 5- speed and that is 5th is only 1 to 1. If you want overdrive you need a diffrent tranny.

Or just pick a higher rear gear as most have a low 1st. You can buy replacement gears and set up whatever ratios you want.

My Tremec bolted right up to orig bellhousing, I converted the whole car to standard so had alot more to do....but I used all stock parts, Weber Clutch...only thing I am working out now is if I need an adjustable pivot ball or a longer throwout bearing....
The Tremec has a better 5th gear ratio for cruising... and they are now making the TKO500 & 600 models...

I am doing the same thing to my '79 10th 4-speed.
Check out www.5speedtransmissions.com. They have a page that outlines exactly what mods are needed to install a Tremec in your T/A. I researched the Richmond and Tremec. Bought a Tremec TKO600 from Mike a 5speedtrans. Hopefully, it'll be in my car in August sometime.

I also went with A Tremec TKO 600. And I got mine from Mike Pell at 5speedtransmissions as well in a group purchase. Have not put the trans in yet (I dont do much in the shop in August as its the warmest time of year). The gearset in the 600 and the .64 OD were perfect for my application. This is the trans that will go behind the new motor Ill finish this fall.

Tom,
My motor is next on the list, too. If it's done in the next two months, it will be miracle. Both mechanically and financially.
