seat-back bumpers
How many bumpers are there supposed to be on each bucket seat: one or two?

That's a good question. It got my attention because on my '68 there was only one per seat. When I recovered the seats, there were clearly two bumper mounting bosses for each seat....so I went back with two.

My seats are original, but only have an oval bumper inboard, nexy to the console. Do your seats ride OK with the double set?

My 67 has two per seat. If you look at the bottom of the seat back you will see the stops that rest on the bumpers.i have one picture of my seat when I tore it down but there is a pair of pliers blocking ones view of the inboard bumper.

And like Phil said, you can see the bumper plates on both sides of the seatback where it is supposed to meet the rubber...and also like I said in my first post, there were screw holes and bosses on BOTH sides when I removed the old covers. You can see what Phil is talking about in this photo...

It would make sense for the outboard bumpers to get beat up and fall off, with passengers getting in and out of the back. Thanks for your help, guys.

I have several sets of seats and none appear to have come from the factory with two bumpers per seat. However when disassembled you can see the provisions are there for the second bumper. Maybe GM was trying to save time and money. Lets see...In 67 there were 85000 + or - GTO's most of which had buckets X 2 bumpers not used...thats about 170,000 bumpers they didn't have make or install...now if we add in all the Lemans and big cars...

Kerm, it never occurred to me that they were even there! I just looked and my 66 has two.

2 of each for 66 buckets too.... bumpers and pads as shown in the photo.
If missing any the seatback will be cocked to one side and it will feel like you're going to fall out of the seat. Over time it could or eventually bend or break the seatback's frame.

I don't think mine ever had the second one. There were no telltale holes in the seatcovers I removed. I think it's as gtospieg says...they just shortchanged them sometimes maybe. Clearly though, they were designed for two so that's what I went with.
Paul, Thanks. I could pull a couple of wrinkles out here and there but I just don't feel like getting into it right now. In fact, I may even leave the seatbacks black!...because I just don't feel like removing them at this point....and they kinda look good with my black and turquoise color scheme. Maybe later I'll dye them correctly.

Could it be that the seat frames are interchangeable and that is why there are provisions for the bumpers on either side? On my 67 seats the release can be mounted on either side of the frame. Whether it came with one or two I am not 100% positive but, since my seats tilt straight forward it makes sense to have two bumpers.

You can clearly see there was only one oval bumper on this 67 driver bucket, oval inboard.
Passenger seat 2nd picture. I put two just like Greg for the same reason. |

My '67 interior is still original and untouched. The seats have one stop like the seats in the photo Charles posted. I haven't noticed it feeling unbalanced but now that everyone mentioned it I'm sure it's going to bug me

That's a good possibility that I had not thought of. For those that had only one, was it the inboard one or outboard one? That might reveal a pattern. I think mine was inboard. At any rate, I've got two now and they're stayin'!

Interesting info from the parts list... For A, B, and G bodies, 66-70, the number of bumpers (#11.381) needed is listed as "AR," as required. Don't know what the criterion was for 'requirement.' Love the GM mysteries, dontcha?

OK... Just for fun. My car has a May, 67 build date, Baltimore plant. How about you, Charles? You other folks?

My 66 was built the 3rd Week of March 1966. I had to change the 4 bumper pads in mine as they were shot. So I believe they were original to the seats. Only the seat covers were changed by the owner before me. The metal seat backs and the lower seat metal trim are also original to the car.
