Default Emissions Decal Codes - Ram Air V ?

Hello,

Does anyone have an understanding of the 2-letter codes on the emission decals? Looking at the various reproduction decals, I see several different codes:

1970 RAM Air IV - PE
1970 Standard 4 bbl engine - PB
1971 455 HO - PN
1970 Firebird 400-4bbl - PC

Etc....

Does anyone happen to know if a code was ever assigned to the RAV ?

Because the RA V was a crate engine and not factory installed, there is no emissions decal.

I understand that, but there is quite a bit of documentation that was created when they were gearing up for production. I'm wondering if that 2-digit code was created prior for some other purpose and might exist?

An explanation I wrote for a Chevy truck website:

Quote:
Further detail: let's say you order a 350 cu in engine. There is one base part for a 350, but it proliferates on Auto vs manual trans, a/c vs no a/c and California emissions vs Federal.

So there would be eight part numbers within that one engine family (there would probably be this many variations for v6, for 305 cu in, for 454 cu in and diesel as well):

12345678 350 cu in manual no a/c Fed
12345679 350 cu in manual w a/c Fed
12345680 350 cu in auto no a/c Fed
12345681 350 cu in auto a/c Fed
12345682 350 cu in manual no a/c Calif
12345683 350 cu in manual a/c Calif
12345684 350 cu in auto no a/c Calif
12345685 350 cu in auto a/c Calif

An assembly plant broadcast code would be assigned to each part number:

TAA 12345678 350 cu in manual no a/c Fed
TAB 12345679 350 cu in manual w a/c Fed
TAC 12345680 350 cu in auto no a/c Fed
TAD 12345681 350 cu in auto a/c Fed
TAE 12345682 350 cu in manual no a/c Calif
TAF 12345683 350 cu in manual a/c Calif
TAG 12345684 350 cu in auto no a/c Calif
TAH 12345685 350 cu in auto a/c Calif

So the operator goes over to a bay that is full of racks and racks of engines (probably more than you've ever seen in one place in your entire life). You can tell him which one to choose, via the build manifest, and he can remember that he needs an "AF", instead of trying to remember 123455683, or manual/AC/California emissions, since he will do this nearly 500 times in one day.
In summary - there is a broadcast code that corresponds with each individual part number. And there is massive proliferation based on a number of factors.

So if RA V was offered, say, in both stick and automatic, there would be at least two part numbers and therefore two codes at a minimum (had they been created).

Kenth, looking at a bunch of buildsheets, it looks like they probably added a code which moved the letters down?

Looks like after the beginning of the year or even around when my assembly book was dated (Feb 1970) it shows PC for 400 4 bbl. I have some with RA IV which took a different code also, having PE after Jan 1970 and PD before then.

I'm not sure if I have any Craftsman Service News on this change, but then I never looked for it.

Early 1970 Pontiac had...
PA 8 cyl 2 bbl
PB 8 cyl 4 bbl
PC 455
PD RA IV

Later 1970 Pontiac had...
PA 350 2 bbl
PB 400 2 bbl
PC 400 4 bbl
PD 455 4 bbl
PE 400 RA IV & SD

Now, if SD meant RA V, then PE was the decal.

Thank you all for the responses - I wasn't getting notifications and had no idea there was this much discussion. This is what I needed.
