I've been searching for helmets online and never realized how expensive they are. Where do you guys buy your helmets? Any tips about helmets is appreciated too. FYI - I'm only going to race a few times per season and didn't want to spend an arm and a leg. I realize that my safety is important but...

I have an old WWII German Helmet in my garage. What do you think? LOL (just kidding)

Just got a sale email from Jeg's last night with some snell 97 helmets at $100 each. But they're 8 years old in a sense.

Do not know if they have a Snell rating past 2000
right now. The old Snell 95 stuff is ok with the Snell 97 being better, etc.

Having been a Tech Inspector for F1, Trans Am,
SCCA club racing, 24 hrs of Daytona, etc safety
has always been my main concern. Road race guys
have minimum standards for safety items that are
always being updated to require the newer pieces.
Good for racing and great for the racers safety.

Except for professional drag racing, safety items
rules for the racers has been pretty shoddy. Some
racers automatically have good stuff because they use their bike helmets for drag racing too. Most
bikers are very safety conscience.

Drag racers are funny in that they will purchase
a excellent manifold and carb for $1500 without
batting an eye and will not spend an extra $200
over a normal helmet for a top of the line piece.

Guess some want to die young like Steve Grebeck.

The medical people can fix darned near anything
on the human body except for the brain if there
is a severe injury. In some cases they can even
fix that. Lingerfelter had a great chance to make
it after his crash because he had top notch type
equipment but an unfortunate reaction to some
medicine has hampered any recovery. If the drug reaction had not occured he might be as good as new right now.

Just my opinion but I would pay what ever it cost
to buy the latest in technology in a helmet and
use the helmet for racing, bike cruising, snow
mobile use, etc. Tom V.

I bought a Simpson for about $205. Then a good friend was kind enough to paint it for me.

Point well taken Tom. It's just that some of my first searches came up with prices of around $700! Just a little sticker shock...

Nice helmet OMT!

It seems to me that most guys I know go with an open face helmet. They must be cooler to wear with the extra air circulation.

Are both SA00 and M00 approved helmets NHRA approved?

I got a full face agv from the local Honda dealer a few years ago. It was a close out as Honda had changed the paint scheme on one of their crotchrockets and the scheme on this helmet was 'passe'. It's black with sort of a white and orange pattern; to me it looks like tiger stripes, so I bought it. I think I paid $125 for it.

M2000 rating is fine for your ET. Look for a brand called HJC i paid $80.00 for my open faced one & i know Dennis Kirk sells them. Mine was purchased from a mail order motorcycle or dirt bike shop hear in Ohio. I don't remember the name one of the guys at work was going there so he picked it up for me.

So your head is only worth $80??????

LOL.

Buy the best helmet you can. Same goes for fire suits and restraints.

Arai and Bell make nice helments and i can attest to the crash quality of both brands.
After 2 motorcycle wrecks one being my fault and hitting a Very large pot hole at over 80 mph and flipping numerous times wearing the Bell helmet, and the last wreck at about 55 where i was run over by a Toyota "Damn Rice" , where i was wearing the Arai helmet. Both helmets survived the wrecks like a Champ. Both were full face units, and neither cracked, and the arai is still in service by a friend of mine who was using a Bell from the early 70s, after my wreck my wife decided i was done riding for a time and so i gave the Arai to a my buddy because even after being in a wreck it was 100 times better than his 70s model Bell.
Needless to say if i had not been wearing the helmets i may not have been dead but i would have been a hell of alot uglier, the doctors at the hospitals look at both helmets after the wrecks and said helmets saved my life both times. Needless to say im an advocate of helmet wearing on bikes and Fast cars.
So in conclusion get a decent helmet at your local motor bike shop...Shoei, Bell, Arai are excellent units and they can all be gotten for under 200 bucks, just buy a lower model and paint it up like OMT did ...nice paint btw OMT.
Mike
If anyone cares to see the before and after pics of my last Rice rocket email me and i will be glad to show you what a Toyota Tercel can do to an FZR 600, which by the way i think almost out weighs the car LOL. Also have some nice Skinned upo body pics :P if your into the gorey crap. They will make you WANT to wear a helmet and Leather.
Actually i think one of my friends who works at a local Motor bike speed shop has a Very nice Used Shoei for sale its black full face with head vents and smoke glass, think he was asking 100 bucks for it ill ask him about it if you like and get some pics if your interested. He is always getting used helmets in on trade in bikes, you know these crotch rocket guys, gota get a helmet that matches the ride :P so they buy new ones and he takes the old ones in with the old bike.

We use Shoei brand helmets at work for our high speed and handling course work at Ford. I think
out helmets were about $235.00 each in basic white
(easy for the track officials to see you have a helmet on). Our Shoei helmets were built with an
open face for visibility, with air vents, and we
bought the head socks in volume as several people
may wear the helmet in a day. We wash the head socks after each event. Keeps the helmets in very
good shape that way. Snell 2000 rated. Tom V.

One of the things that increases the cost is if they are Nomex lined. Also check with the manufacturer what paint is approved to use. Some wil soften the shell.

I also read somewhere the Snell M vs S rating are against different types of impacts. The M (motorcycle) are for things like pavement whereas the S (for cars) test against things like roll bar tubing.

Mike- A friend of mine had a bad bike wreck and his helmet save him too. Talk about body scabs! Nasty looking! I'll pass on the used helmet. I'm sure it's a nice one but I'll get a new one. I think I'll go with an open face version for up to around the $250 range.

Thanks again,
Phil

Phil, the front of your head can be damaged just as easily as the rear and sides. Open faced helmets aren't a safe idea. They shouldn't even be legal, in my opinion.

Really! I guess if you think about steering wheel impacts it can get pretty ugly. I think I'll change my mind now that I think of it. I just don't relish the thought of sitting in a hot car at the track with a full face. But my mind probably will be focused on the race anyways. I remember the announcer at Maple Grove saying it hit over 100 degrees at the line last year!
