I have always used the cardboard crank box it came in. I assume you don’t have one. See if you can borrow one. Keep In mind, my shipping guy told me that anything over 50#s has an EXTRA $25 charge as of January 1 both fed ex and ups. You are looking at $200 plus round trip. I would find a local shop and The amount you save in shipping will pay for bearings!

I tend to over do things. I just dont want to deal with issues from the receiving end.

I have shipped a few cranks and this is how I would ship a crank.

First wrap any main journal surface that will make contact with the bracing with a few layers of electrical or some form of a durable tape.

I would use 3/4" plywood to ship the crank and support it on both ends as well as two center mains.

Cut four squares of equal size 3/4" plywood and bolt one end to the back and then brace the other on the front using a old used crank bolt. I would then create a hole centered in each the size of the mains and then cut them in half and sandwich two of the center mains with them.

Next tie them together by boxing it all in with 3/4" plywood, insuring to tack the center supports and then roll it in cardboard about 4 layers. Then slap a label on it.

But I tend to overdo things.

Great advice! What he said... Again, I box the heck out of them.

SPEED SAFE, NICK

Check with Gary H on the board here. He lives in Jacksonville and builds a good bit of engines and could point you in the right direction.

Take it to Roy at J & J crankshaft. It's on Rosselle st in Jacksonville. He has a ancient crank grinder but he's good at what he does. Tell him where you want it IE: high or low on the specs, and take his time and you'll pay him extra for it.

When Crankshaft Specialties was in Memphis, we used to ship Pontiac cranks via Greyhound bus lines. It was much cheaper than UPS. I'm not sure if that is still a viable way to ship heavy engine parts, or not.

We used to use the cardboard boxes that reground cranks came in when we shipped them.

Two ways to ship by bus from searching on the net, Greyhound, or Busfreighter:

I would go with a timber box at minimum. Years back I took my crank to be balanced and sat outside the shop in my van while he was doing it, a delivery courier van pulled up with cranks to be balanced, the driver threw about 6 of them out of the side door with a clang onto the concrete floor. They were in cardboard boxes......

I would also use a wooden box and go to someone that can use foam to hold it in place or do like I did when shipping a posi unit. I put it in a bag and vacuumed the air out and tie wrapped it closed. Then in the bottom half of the box put another bag and used the spray foam cans to fill it and held the posi in it. Put another one on top and did the same. The guy that received it said it was the best packing he's ever seen and had zero damage in shipping.
