Default 66 GTO 4 speed console question

I am going to be in the process of installing the console back in this 66 GTO. According to PHS it originally but it got lost along the way. I have been doing some reading and it seems that originally the carpet was not over the tunnel on console cars. It went inboard about 2" from the side skirts of the console. Is this a true statement and does anyone have any pictures or any tips that may be helpful? Also the front bracket is longer on one side. Which side goes to the driver side?

I would definitely set the 64 console in the 66 in position to make sure your shifter handle does not interfere with the console housing. If all clears, then proceed.

This is how I set mine up 35 years ago and still going. Put the 64 4 spd boot, no console, on first, and then the boot retaining ring. Set the spring on top of the boot and the sliding pad on the spring. Now install your console. Should work great as long as the handle does not interfere. If it does, don't cut on the 64 console. Like was stated, a one year only console....

Using the 64 console in a 66 do you feel it's better using 64 boot assy . as opposed to the 66? I am also using the 64 shifter. Do you have any idea who carries the spring and rubber O's for the 64?

The 65 boot will not work on a 64. Someone else sais 65-67 were the same so it won't work. The underside of the 64 is totally different as far as the boot seal goes. When using a 64, you need to use 64 parts.

Thank you Bill. I see the boot and retainer available but can't seem to find anything on the rubbers spring or vinyl. Any tips?

The vinyl pad is R148. Maybe get some help from someone who has a 64 console removed. It slides over the shifter handle. Probably 1/2" diameter and 3" long. I thought they reproduced it. I was wrong, I guess. I don't have a new catalogue.

OPG and Ames have the vinyl on back order. No luck at this point on the spring.
