Default 68 GTO Ragtop value? Looking for another car

In the last couple years I've been thinking about another project. I looked at model A's, bought and sold a couple trucks, even had a jeep. Obviously I keep going back to pontiacs. So when a co-worker told me about a 68 GTO rag I was in there like swimwear.

I got a phs on the car and turns out it is very nicely optioned, tons of options as a matter of fact, power everything, lamp package auto, ac, ps, pdb, safety track posi, alpine blue. The car is numbers matching except the heads, it is all there.

The body is not that bad, it has been in a garage since 1986. The hood tach is smashed off. The hood and decklid needs a ton of work and will certainly need a trunk pan. Other than that it has the standard small rust areas in the corners.

I researched some values and was prepared to offer 8,500 bucks. Was I that far off? I wanted to start a thread earlier but just didn't with the way things went down. He was thinking more along the lines of 25,000 bucks, without a pic what do you ladies/gents think?

I think the seller just watched a car auction on TV. No way a '68 'vert in that shape should pull 25K. I don't think you're far off.

Well I don't know about that but it was certainly worth more than $8,500 to be honest that was LeMans money you offered figure the car is worth somewhere in the high 30s low forties done so you go back from there probably more like 15 grand is what you should have offered for it and maybe you would have got it I haven't heard about a numbers matching GTO convertible being sold for $8,500 in 15 years

Need more info. Does the car run and drive? How well? What’s the interior like?

Meanwhile, in the "for sale" section:

Sounds like you couldn't build the car you're looking at for this price.

Point taken, I could still offer that. I couldn't start a thread on it in time. The car does not run and drive, will need seat covers, dash is actually perfect.

^^Here it is.. This looks like more rust than you describe on yours and asking nearly $10K. Personally, I thought that was a little high when I read it for a '68 but maybe they're coming up?

I paid 5k for a non running 68 LeMans convertible. I think 8500 is light because the car has huge upside.

I gave 12k for my 70 GTO convertible that was a running inspected driveable car. It will need quarters but that is it. I felt like I got a really good deal on it.

What is the status of the motor? Is there a chance it would run? That’s why I gave 5 for my 68- it looked like someone had driven it into the storage unit.

Didn’t come with keys or anything but a new lock cylinder, carb, radiator and 5 oils changes later the car drives great.

It supposedly was rebuilt in 1985, I guess that is when it received its incorrect heads. I assume the guy got a call saying the valve seats were trashed. So #18 heads were installed. It would run, I've gotten way worse looking running, as many of you probably have. That other 68 is way worse rust-wise.
I think I am gonna make an offer on it. I just got the PHS today, to be clear I love the car but hate the fact it has ac and is a convertible. I would probably sell it in a year or two.....then again thats what I said about the firebird 22 years ago. Anybody know the difference between a hardtop coupe and a sports coupe?

Thanks for guidance guys!

Sports coupe has the b-pillar, not available in a GTO in '68.
