OK School me on Carb and intake
I've been needing a carb for my 455 HO for a while. I finally broke down and bought a Holley 4150 DP a while back expecting it to be a quick easy swap... what do ya know... that's not gonna happen. I pulled off the carb that was on it and didn't even really notice the issue until I tried to put the new carb on----damnit.
Ok so I'm going to assume that this is the stock intake correct. There are obviously differences in the carbs.... mounting tab locations, butterfly location - which will never work, etc. So what are my options for a carb then? Spreadbore to squarebore adapters are available to allow the carb to be mounted to that intake. Unfortunately it will throw off the shaker height, and it does not address the choke, throttle hookup, etc..

This is REAL easy....
Just find a CLEAN 1972 Pontiac Quadra-jet.....400 and 455......They are identical cosmetically.... Put a kit in it...and get some bigger jets...if you need them......or send it out to a Q-jet guy.... It will fit properly......work as well as the holly........but won't leak raw fuel all over your hot intake...and set your car on fire... A properly set-up Q-jet....will easily get your HO....in to the 12's......if the rest of your car can keep up... |

IMHO, If its going to be a regular driver, get a 77-79 Pontiac or Buick 800 CFM Q-jet. These carbs have whats called APT, which is under a plug below the 4 inch air cleaner gasket. This allows to "richen" the Idle mixture and smooth out the engine with the gas we have. Cliff recommends 'em and they are an excellent choice for a non original carb usage. Mine was rebuilt by a member here and adjusted and installed in 2006 and has not been touched since. As Cliff says, it "runs like fuel injection"

APT adjusts the main circuit not the idle circuit.
The idle circuit is a separate stand alone circuit adjusted by the idle mixture screws in the throttle plate. |

They will need idle tube and jet/rod changes to richen them up from the smog calibrations, but they are a super piece-far better than any Holley.

I knew about the adapters but ruled that out immediately due to shaker clearance...
I have ordered Cliff's book incase I take the rebuild/modify route myself..... I do have a Q-jet from a '79 403 if that can work good I saw this for a '72 carb.. https://www.amazon.com/ROCHESTER-CAR...uretor+pontiac also a service like this...http://quadrajetpower.com/quadrajet-...pecific-needs/ The 2 links would be stressing the budget out but I'd like to do it right and do it once. |

I saw that one about a week ago. Gonna need a lot of TLC and a whole lot more money.

I’m not sure the seller has even looked at his own pictures;
“The body is in decent shape” - the quarter and trunk floor have holes I could fit my fist through! “It has been sitting for nearly 25 years” - the tabs say ‘85, and by my count that’s 33 years |

I think that was one of the 4 or 5 early 70's T/A's that was for sale in Daytona Florida a year or so ago. Looks very familiar.

I wouldn't think twice about parting it out and scrapping the rusty carcass. Some must die so others can live and that car is a perfect candidate. Can't save everything!

I think we all agree it's too far gone for even thinking about restoration. It's missing a lot and what is there is in bad shape. Engine, Trans & Rear End salvageable...probably?
My fears are some crook will strip out what can be re-used, cut the numbers out of it, re-body it in something else and dupe some poor guy out of his money thinking he just got a great deal on a rare Pontiac muscle car for $40,000 + dollars. Probably oughta remember this one's VIN.
