Default 1966 GTO Worth?

My brother sent these pics to me and wanting to know the worth of it.
Looks rough to me, but don't know price ranges of these cars.

Brother said probably worth lot less than guy is asking.

Maybe $8,500 seeing you are probably looking at investing $30K unless you go the rat rod look.

Two red flags. No woodgrain on the dash and wrong grilles.

Out here in the Pacific Northwest where I'm located, that would car would probably fall in the $6-8k range. Based on the photos, it's going to need absolutely everything done, though. A car in that shape only makes sense to restore if A) it has sentimental value to you and are willing to get in over your head, or B) you have the skills and equipment needed to perform all of the repairs yourself. If neither of those two elements are present, it would make more sense to start with a different example that didn't need so much work. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve to be restored - just rather that it needs the right buyer given the work it needs.

$30k to fix up this car would be extremely conservative unless you can do ALL of the work yourself. I've already hit that mark on my '66 restoration in metal work alone, and my car was in considerably better shape than this example. Quality and thus cost of the work performed does vary greatly, though.

Good catch. Will need to check the VIN to confirm it is a true GTO and not a clone. To my eye, it's hard to tell if the wood grain dash is there or not. Could just be severely faded and coated in a thick layer of dust & grime. The grilles are indeed incorrect, but it also has what appears to be a donor hood, so I'm assuming it was in a front end collision and perhaps someone just threw whatever grilles they could find on it. Would be nice if there was a photo showing the tail panel.

Thanks for the info.
Don't know if he took a pic of the VIN.
I'll let him know.

I paid $5500 for my 66 post that was in much better condition, but I felt that was a really good deal. I would put this car at $6-7K

Being an automatic it's really not worth fixing, unless you have some sentimental attachment. Even if you could do the work yourself you would be waaay upside down in it. 2 speed automatics really hurt the 64-6 cars.

Wouldn't 99.9% of us throw out the 2-speed and install a better trans, though? For a car that is as beat as this one, I view it as a blank slate, so whatever engine and trans are currently in it are not particularly important.

4 grand. Automatic that needs just about everything.
I paid $5K for this one 7 or 8 years ago. 4spd with a '71 400 in it. Not streetable but it would run, move and stop.

I am not sure where you guys are buying ones in decent condition for $5-8K. I have been looking for a (Tempest, Lemans or GTO) body only for about 3 years to turn into a race car and put mine back on the street. I have seen rusted out shells advertised for 12K. Any decent body only here in the South goes for 10K-12k.

Well, if I'd only known...there was a '67 LeMans 2dr. hardtop in Linden Green at the Moreland Avenue Pick a Part a few years ago. Very solid. I got the front fenders from it as they were just lying on the ground. I should have gotten a lot more from it. Real solid and mostly complete. Probably 7~8 years since I've seen anything more than 30 years old of any make over there though.

Two years ago I bought a complete 65 phs documented gto (3spd/4bbl) for $2200. ROUGH but fairly complete and partially disassembled. Originally a CA car with no rot. I called within minutes of posting and took the rest of the day off from work to run and grab it.

Most of the ones you see advertised are for too much $. That’s why they stay up for so long. If you don’t see the “good” ads within minutes you can be too late as somebody as already scooped them up.

I agree with $4k-ish for this 66 as it sits.
