Default Upper door hinge difference.

Just curious to everyone's thoughts on the cast vs. stamped steel upper door hinges, pros and cons to each. I just realized I have one of each and plan on replacing one so they match before reassembling. Thanks.

Johnny

My 66 was built in Pontiac in late winter/spring of 66, it has cast door hinges.

Mine was built the 4th week of March, also at the Pontiac Mi. plant. I guess I'm curious as to if one is better than the other, or more durable. They had to change the design for a reason, maybe just to cut cost?

I think the ‘67 upper door hing was cast for about the first half of the year, then they switched to the stamped steel shown below.

Both my 09A PON and 10A PON GTOs have the stamped upper hinges as originally installed. Different plants likely used whatever was in the bins.

Good information, I stand corrected. My Jan. 67 Baltimore hardtop has stamped (as does Racerboy's 67, built same day), so that must indicate the change over time frame for Baltimore.

I have collected 8 66 and 67 doors and found those 67's did not have cast.

in July of 66 i went to work at the defiance central foundry here in defiance Ohio, my first job was sorting and inspecting door hinges , at that time had no idea what they were for, do now 67 A body cars these were made of malleable iron, that dept. ran till mid 67 then was phased out to run grey iron, we also made front hubs rear end housings and many other small parts, great memories, retired in 06 with 40 years, still have the 66 gto i bot in 66. Cool memories JD, didn't realize you were a fellow Ohioan, I'm from Toledo, work in Delta. Wouldn't by chance know my buddy Orv Dickerson would ya?... Thanks to everyone for the replies, it seems on style isn't necessarily "better" than the other, and the cast piece would be more correct.

Chris,
Seeing if I understand this correctly. The data plate is for a 67 built in November 66 so that's a pretty early build, maybe a few months into the model year at most. I assume that you tell the difference just by looking at the hinges, assume the thicker lower hinge is cast and the upper hinge is stamped. My 67 was built in June 1967 in Pontiac, sounds like it has stamped hinges.

Side question, I assume that the door must be removed to change the little roller wheel on the bottom hinge that holds the hinge in the detents? Mine broke off.
