66 Tiger gold build
Thought I would post up some info about my 66 GTO build. I may have posted about it before but I couldn’t find the thread.
I bought the car locally (Houston) not running (or steering!) for 5500 or 6500- it was about 5-6 years ago when I bought it. The car was originally Nightwatch Blue, 4bbl, auto, AC. We got the steering and brakes working as well as getting to run right away. It had a 68 400 in it and the Trans had been swapped for a TH350. While it ran, it ran poorly. The timing chain cover was corroded through which I had never seen. The engine was pretty worn out. The car was originally a San Diego car (came with original black plates). Then spent some time in MO before being willed to the family I bought it from. The body looked pretty good except for the drivers rear corner. Honestly if that corner wasn’t crunched in I probably would have just buffed the paint and driven it. |

While these cars look good in red, in my opinion no car pulls off gold the way a 66-67 A body does. I have a blue 70 and a couple red cars so gold it was.
Thanks to some on this forum I was able to nail the color. I know there is a lot of question about this color but I’m happy with it. Pics are on the way to the body shop and progress This car was covered in filler. We were scared what we would find but it wasn’t really that bad. The previous painter literally ‘sculpted ‘ the body. We ended up putting quarter skins on it but the rest of the car was rust free Last edited by 1965gp; 06-02-2020 at 09:19 PM. |

Finally the car is home and assembled. These are pics during the assembly and a couple the photographer took when she was at my house taking pics of the other cars

The motor still ran, but it was mixing oil and water. Since the car was coming together nicely we decided to have a 400 built for it. My neighbor builds transmissions so he built the transmission for it. I had a 65 Tri Power so we added that to it for some glam.
The shop did a great job cleaning up the engine compartment and getting the motor together. I’m really happy with the way it’s coming together. The spacers for the valve cover will be painted engine color and the correct fuel lines, filter, etc will be added this week. If I’m lucky we will get it fired up later this week |

Thanks guys- it’s obviously not going to be concourse. Looking for a nice driver in the end. Something that starts every time and has cold ac.
I’m pretty happy with it so far. |

Sorry- forgot to answer the question on the motor. The block is a 77 TA 6.6 400 and we used the 68 400 heads. I think they used the 2802 cam.
I had a question about the paint code so I am attaching a pic of the extra paint I got with it |

Radiator is in (had to modify a non ac core support the car ended up with at some time for he bigger radiator), fuel system is hooked up- at this rate the car will be running next week!

Fired up the GTO today at the shop. Sounds great!! Waiting in electric fans and exhaust to do the break in next week.
The valve cover spacers I bought from Ames fit great and blend in. Extremely happy with the amount of effort the shop put into detailing the motor. |

Engine compartment looks awesome. I like that you kept the 389 valve covers. The trips just don't look right with the 400 covers.

I agree on the valve covers. I used the spacers since I was using the later heads because I wasn’t sure they would be tall enough
