Default At one time we had a couple of Pontiac Guys

who competed in the Silver State "Cannonball" type Road Race.
Whatever happened to those guys?

That question being asked, here is the "BADDEST OF THE BAD" ON THE ROAD RACERS out there today.
Everyone has seen the Cannonball movie. The guys left the Red Ball garage on the east side of Manhattan at 12:57 a.m. on November 10. The 427 Cobra was a Turtle compared to these guys.

It took Toman, Tabbutt and Chadwick 27 hours and 25 minutes to reach the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach, in L.A.'s South Bay. They destroyed the record with their 700+ WHEEL HP Twin Turbo souped-up all-wheel drive 2015 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG sedan, bristling with electronics.

It is cool to run 1/8 or 1/4 mile race in sub 8 second times but can you run an overall average speed of 103 mph, including stops for fuel, you are doing some endurance racing.

Just Saying. Tom V.

Maybe not the same as a 300 hour Ford FIE test but similar in what you are doing for durability testing of the engine and turbos.

Saw that article. Just Insane! Especially in this day & age.

Some Years ago, there was a former NASCAR vehicle that ran 240 mph for a few minutes.
It was the Fastest Car in the Nevada 240 MPH Silver State classic May 2012.

Jim Peruto sets world record 217+ MPH average on 100 miles of highway. Modified K Bush Daytona NASCAR vehicle. Big difference between 100 miles of open desert road and close to 3000 miles across the country. It was a NA Engine, not boosted.

And a few years earlier you had Big Red which was a race car also based on a NASCAR Chassis. Part 1 is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSkQYk8W430

Part 2 is here: https://youtu.be/X5RMudFS3QY

Fast Cars but nothing like the Cannonball comes close to the 24 Hrs of Le Mans.
BUT THE CANNONBALL DOES NOT HAVE PIT CREWS WAITING IN THE PITS EITHER LIKE LE MANS. Two totally different types of racing. In this case both with boosted engines.

Bonneville is 7 miles of 450+ mph speeds. Le Mans cars can hit 240 mph multiple times each lap for 24 hours,
Silver State does 200+ mph for 30 minutes + and a few Pontiac Drag cars will do 1/4th mile for 5 seconds at some point.

We have run the Silver State 3 times in our 68 EFI GTO. Running a Butler 572cid 455 with a solid roller cam and a 6 speed T56 trans. Last time in 2002. Did the 130mph class with a high trap speed of 147. Great fun.

Unfortunately in 2006 I had a garage fire. Still trying to bring it back.
