I understand that the 70GS Stage 1 can spank a modern day Corvette. Do you think?

But first... Here are a few pics of my first GS. A 1971 Stage1 convertible. It was the real deal, one of 81 built. I bought it June 1, 1984 and sold it in 1989. A number of years later it was completely burned up in a fire.

[QUOTE=68bird400HO]
I do remember in one of the Musclecar Shootouts back in the 80s where the championship race was between a well tuned Stage1 (I believe it was John Chamberlain's car) and Dan Jensen's 455HO T-37 (also well tuned). The 455HO won in a very close match. .....maybe this is a good segway back to the HOs. You ARE the MAN! That's JUST what we need here to get this thread back on track. Dan Jensen is DEFINATELY the HOmaster! (he knows how to set them up & he knows how to DRIVE them! Was the shootout you are referring to in a magazne or video? It would be a good article or clip to post here. |

I believe it was one of the shootouts sponsored by Muclecar Review magazine back in the late 80s or so. I remember seeing the cover of that issue with both cars launching.
...and John Chamberlain is to Stage1s what Dan Jensen is to 455HOs. John's brown 70 Stage1 was the one featured on My Classic Car a few years back.

I would have said Greg Gesler myself. I believe he is/was doing the heads for many in FAST, especially Buick.

Yes, Gessler is a definitely another Buick guru. I think he has the hardest running stock GSs. John has been messing with GSs since they were practically new. He knows how to get them to run and keep them totally stock appearing.

Doin' some googling I found this interesting article on the 1998 pure stock drags. Dan Jensen's T-37 only ran exhibition passes but was running 12.60s. John Chamberlain's Stage1 was running right about same, as was the 440 6-Pak Superbee. I am still looking for the earlier article with the Stage1 and T-37. Does anyone remember this?

Started digging in the "library" LATE the other nite & found Muscle Car Review Sept 85.
Article features Dan Jensens 71 455ho T-37 (13.47@104.53) spanking a Hemi Daytona (13.96@101.35) Sonds like he was running almost a second quicker in 98. |

Lot of things can be optimized in 10 years. The swap to 15" repro rubber had to help some in the traction dept.

I emailed Dan about his recollection of his match with John's Stage1. Here is what he had to say:
"....I think you are referring to the very first musclecar race back in 1985 at the Buick GS Nationals in Bowling Green , KY. Chamberlain and I were the two fastest cars, and we wound up racing each other. I didn’t win the challenge because I accidentally didn’t turn on my electric fuel pump. I had a Holley pump on it, and the mechanical couldn’t pull fuel thru it very well when it was turned off. I had a brain fart for that run with all the excitement going on. I remember I got the jump off the line, was pulling away in first, hit second, pulled away farther, and then the car shut down, and the Buick went on by for the win. Back in the pits, I told John what happened and asked if he’d be willing to go out again, and he said no. If I only knew then what I know now that our stock mechanical fuel pumps can handle 11-second cars! I remember that Muscle Car Review covered the race and I would expect the issue would have been around September or October of 1985. I can’t find my scrapbook for the T-37 at this time. I think my T-37 was slightly faster than John’s GS at that point in time, but half of racing is luck, and it was on his side for that race...." So does anyone have any old Musclecar Review magazines?

I SHOULD have ALL issues up until the early/mid 90's,but need to organize/inventory them.
Do you have any specific dates/issues in mind? I MAY have some duplicates. |

Dan was thinking it be around the Sept or Oct 1985 issue.
