1967 Grand Prix Hideaway Headlight Help
Mine currently do not work. I took the lower valence off and hooked the actuator up to a vacuum hand pump and it will not hold a vacuum. Since there is only the one large actuator for both headlight doors, does anyone know of anybody that rebuilds them? Or does anyone have the part # for that actuator, so that my friend can try and cross reference another vehicle that may have used the same one? It seems odd to me that there would have been a bunch of different places making these for all the automakers so with that in mind, maybe something from Ford would work as well? Thanks for any input.

I think that it is a 1 year only part. I have never seen or heard of something else working there.

They are fairly easy to fix. I got replacement seals from Ames and fixed mine and a spare that I had. Been working for several years now on that fix.

Can you give a bit more detail? How did you split the can? Any pictures taken during the surgery?

I was afraid you were gonna ask me that. I gotta try and remember what I did. :-) It's been a few years now....
So you can use the dust boots and seals for the 68 units. In Ames world, it's PB155 and PB155AK. You don't have to split the unit. Pretty sure I just removed the old seal and boot and replaced with the new units; it wasn't difficult. Unfortunately I don't think I took any pictures of the process. Alan |

No worries, Perry.
Why not use the '68 repop can? Probably needs some adapting, but the function is the same. https://secure.amesperf.com/qilan/De...A&web_access=Y

Ah. Thanks Steve. Never looked at a '68 hideaway system. So two smaller cans instead of one larger can? It still sounds like an option to update the '67 system, but I would have to look at a diagram for the '68 to see where to adapt.
Once you have a welder and a plasma cutter, anything is possible.

ir appears that there are 2 different items being discussed; the actuator, which I believe can be repaired with the parts mentioned above from Ames. I was lucky and found an NOS one a few years ago.
My vacuum canister, mounted on the left side inner fender, tucked out of sight, was trashed. I could not locate a replacement, ended up ordering the one for 68, I believe I had to drill a hole and some epoxy (out of sight), and it appears to work. |
