Default Torque rods 71 Firebird trunk

Does anyone here have positive experience installing new torque rods?? I have bought 2 sets and neither will hold up the trunk more than 1/2 way, this is without the spoiler installed. I even tried an original passengers side rod I have(thicker than the drivers side and larger diameter than the repo) and it will not work any better. The rod for a spoiler has the passengers side a larger diameter. It is almost like my set up needs a larger diameter rod for the drivers side like the passengers side. Has anyone here installed new rods, with a spoiler, and had them hold the trunk up with a spoiler installed?? thanks for reply's..

We installed the repos on my rusty 71 and it's holding the deck lid fine. My buddy put the repos on his 71 and it was fine for a while and now they are dead and won't hold the trunk up. If I had to do it over again I would try to find originals.

My thought is you installed one ore both incorrectly. Not casting stones but if I recall one of the rods had to twist around so far it almost was impossible with improvised tools. I thought I was doing it wrong and did it the more natural seeming way but ended up with no support for lid. If installed correctly it takes an unnaturally seeming amount of torque to install.
Try again perhaps?

Default RODS

my 72 trunk pops very nice and controlled...as I recall my 76 was deadly (most likely why I added a power trunk to distance myself back then)...I have 2 original rods that measure 3/4' that look nice and could be tried in the mix'...70RAIII if you would like them....I will ship them to you n/c if you like as I will not be using them LMK...also my LH side is on the 2nd notch...the RH is on the top notch

Steve-

yea..before twisting the rod was 3/4 full turn away, had to use a 5" section of "D" steering shaft to twist it, are you saying it twists more that a full 360 degrees before locking in position?? in my case it will need to be twisted 630 degrees(360 +270)?? seems like a hell of a lot of twisting

The original pass side rod I have is .26" diameter. Are you saying you have one that is 3/4" diameter?? that is too wide to fit in the notches..

630 is too much. I wonder if you have them reversed? It's like a Chinese puzzle. You try and try and all of a sudden it works and your not sure what ya did different.

the 2 I have are the same...my RH side does look thinner...now that I am thinking about it.. the rods on the car were replaced...in the early 90s I got from one of these vendors N.O.S. of these parts of all things...I had a 70 Esprit or 76 T/A that I pulled parts off of...I cannot recall how my 72 trunk worked..since I wanted new (and the original deck lid had all silver overspray (underspray?!)..I got n.o.s.from PONTIAC (along with fenders, door skins, plastic tail panel, etc.)...back when there were PONTIAC dealers and you could do these things!!...but the rods I ordered from a catalog a few years later...so since new lid I must have thought to get new rods...I can not recall how my 72 trunk did work so I do not mind sending them out to you as I hope it solves the problem as I can not remember!...easy to send LMK

here they are....I will remove the rod cover (between the rear window and the boot...trunk in the States)...I remember those words used for my Corgi Green Hornet Black Beauty diecast instruction sheet from the 70s...so you can see how they are installed...also they have a black rubber sleeve they both slide through...most likely for sound...but Steve is right in that they get a funky twist over each other...the pic will explain..will post later

I got the smaller diameter drivers side in. Had to twist it >360 degrees to give enough pressure. Cracked a nuckle, black n blue already so need to ice down and see where this goes. will look quite funny in church this morning, left hand pinky all black and blue !!lol..
will post here later if I can get the pass side installed and test a trunk ..

Steve-

thanks for your help..but the size rods give their position away. plus the bends on the handle piece. The piece with rubber scheeth is drivers side and thick(on spoiler cars) is passengers side. I ended up twisting mine everybit of 360++ degrees, closer to 450.. busted my left hand up real nice..

I talked to a guy recently with 73 TA who has put 2 sets in and can't get lid to stay up, said he has snapped rods (repro) in install. I told him to try used ones instead....

got it working.. the drivers side(smaller diameter) needed to be wound an additional full turn. Was not easy getting it turned around and clipped in, but it now holds trunk up with spoiler and pops nicely from locked position.. thanks guys..

I also installed repro rods in my 72 Camaro.
They worked like a parachute, and now, theyve lost some strength.
Big rod,small rod,installed properly.
Goes up,then just sags down a bit to 3/4 open.
