Default Power Steering Question

I bought a 65 GTO in April and may have an issue with the power steering pump. Right away I needed to replace the steering box as it was leaking so I installed a quick ratio one. The PS belt was also slipping when turning the wheel so I replaced the cheap belt that was on it with a high quality one and made sure it was tensioned correctly. Now when driving the steering box doesn't turn smoothly, as it sort of "choppy", and the PS belt still screeches when turning. I'm thinking the PS pump is bad. Any thoughts?

The car hadn't been driven much in years so I've had to do a few things to it such as ball joints and tie rods, fuel pump, tripower carbs rebuild, valve cover gaskets, heater core, water pump. Now maybe a PS pump. Here is a photo.

Looking good! Try some "belt conditioner:". $3 at your local auto parts store. Got rid of my squeaky belts!

Have you made sure the pulleys are in the same plane?

Sounds like you haven't 'bled' or gotten all the air out of the system when you changed out the box. Did you?

I tensioned the PS belt using the ear but not sure if the alternator belt was loose. I will check and redo.

My mechanic installed the new box. He's quite good with the old cars so I would have expected him to.

Good thought but in a perfect world, you shouldn't need any of that conditioner with a new belt. Want to find the issue if there is one and not mask it.

The day you got it back from that mechanic, did it drive properly? If so, then you've got a different problem. If not, why didn't you take it right back to him and have him fix it right.

I looked at some pictures and the 65 setup isn't the one I was thinking of. The one I was thinking of had a double pulley on the pump and the alternator belt went around it too. Sorry for the error 40 years ago makes you forget things though....LOL

I do remember that the PS pump belt had to be tighter than most so it didn't squeal though, almost felt too tight.

Jerry's right, doctors get to bury their mistakes, mechanics have to fix theirs ................

Another tech in the buick dealership I worked at said that to a doctor/buick owner, he didn't laugh at it though........................

In my experience, the pump and system takes a week or so to get all the air out. Just drive it for a while and I think it will correct itself.
