'62 LeMans Bucket seats?
I'm mostly a big car guy but came across a pair of bucket seats for what I think is a '62 Lemans.. The passenger side is meant to be stationary and the drivers side has a hockey stick adjuster coming out of the front. Please view the following thread for photos and details. I initially thought these might be from a '64 Tempest or GTO:

Passenger seat on the early Tempest's are stationary. There are 2 different set of bolt holes where the seat can be mounted forward or back but no slide adjustment like the drivers seat. Remember, these cars were Pontiac's first compact, no frills car. Cost's money to put an adjuster on the passenger side.

Thanks for the verification. I'm glad to know I have something at least close to what I thought it was. If anyone needs these seats I'll be listing them for sale in the classifieds here first. Send me a PM. If nobody wants them here, to ebay they'll go...

Is the width of the seats the same as the '64/'65 A-body?

What measurement are you going by? The seat backs?
And what is the measurement for an A-body car?

Can't remember the numbers but set a tape measure across the seat bottom years ago, & the 61-62 buckets were narrower by a couple of inches

I just measured these seats and compared them to my '63 Grand Prix. They are exactly the same size. The only differences are the tracks and chrome trim. Perhaps they made the 63, 64's and '65s narrower to accomodate the center console?

Hhhmmmmm, Interesting. I know some are different as far as how the seat tilts forward. I know the 61-63 when it tilts forward also pivots inward towards the center of the car. this is susposed to give more intrance/exit room for the back seat. I belive the A body's just lean forward.

I too agree that they are the same or at least close. I personally installed '65 Gto seat upholstery onto my '62 Lemans buckets simply because I like the pontiac emblem. However, the back frame did seem too wide for the '65 upholstery by a couple inches at most, but may have been my amateur installing techniques. The rear seat upholstery for convertible was a perfect fit.
The hinging that Keith mentioned is correct. The Tempest tilt inward versuses forward. This can be swapped with the frames as those areas were welded on sections of the frames. The seat springs are the same with Corvair, tempests and Gto through '65. Fortunately, those are reproduced now along with the foam that will need some modification for proper fit.

How did putting the smaller covers on the bigger seats work out? Got a photo?
I too like the Pontiac emblem on the '65 covers but if they don't fit the seats they're useless, no?

seat width
Just because you provoked my thoughts, I measured my 62' Tempest seats and a 64 GTO seat and my Tempest seat is 2 inches wider than the 64' seat. The Tempest seat measures 25 inches and the GTO seat measures 23 inches both across the bottom section. Donnie

WOW!!! CRS strikes again. I know the ones I measured a long time back were about 2" different. Just assumed the 61-63 was the narrower measurement. I guess tthe narrower seats will make it easier to install a console!

Also, these Tempest seats with the mounting feet the way they are look alot easier to adapt to the floor of a big car that has a bench seat. They can be bolted up through the floor and leveled on bolts with 2, 3 or however many nuts and not have to weld brackets to the floor. Of course, I'm hoping someone can use them for a real Tempest Lemans but there's always the possibility they will end up in a purple Impala.. Last edited by MOJO Catalina; 03-15-2011 at 11:11 AM. |

Interesting!!! All of the 61-62 Buckets I have, have the drivers seat adjustment lever on the left side of the seat. The one in the pic has the lever in front. Dont remember where the lever is on 63's.

These cars are not worth the price of a GTO so I doubt very much you will hear Cha-Ching, especially since PUI sells replacement seat covers for just over $300.
