It's called cowl induction. Works well, and has for years.

Hood scoops are mostly mostly cosmetic, but, when done right, they do work...

Right, duh, that was my point - there's a high pressure region at the base of the windshield, but the center of the hood is a low pressure area. If you want to use a forward-facing hoodscoop in the middle of the hood, you have to lift it way up above the hood - ala pro stock. The original GTO scoop was purely cosmetic.

That hood is a little too retro for my tastes. Stonebreaker is absolutely right, the location of the fresh air openings are in the wrong place. Until 1971, the scoops on the GTO were in an ineffecutal location. Most of the current GTO renderings place the scoops in the same non-functional spot in the low-pressure area at the center of the hood. Get them to the front of the hood where they can do some RAMMING! That front loction would probably make ducting fitment less of a nightmare as well.

I'm 50+, and this information is older than I am. It is no secret that the scoops were purely ornamental

Back in the 60's you didn't have the problem with rice like you do now. It doesn't matter if the car is a honduh or a camaro, if you stick a wing on the back and a big scoop on the hood, it just screams 'rice'. Never mind if the camaro has the balls to actually need the wing, it's rice by association.

So? Is there something wrong with a car that looks good? So you like that jellybean common lack of class look...

No, I like well-proportioned, clean lines that stand up on their own without having to resort to gold chains and chest rugs.

Yet you want to stick a non-functional hood scoop on the car? You're voting for Kerry, I assume?

By 'clean lines', I'm thinking of something like a '68-70 Chevelle. That car don't need NUTHIN. You can enhance it's impact with big wheels and dropping the ride height an inch or two, but wings and scoops just get in the way.

The new GTO is the same way. It has very clean, simple lines. The way to change its look is to lower the suspension and maybe change the rake a little, and add the optional 19" Monaro wheels. This isn't an 'in your face' car. It's a second look car - At first look it just looks like another commuter car, but then you take a second look and you notice the lowered stance and the dual exhaust. Then when you HEAR the exhaust, you KNOW this car is something special...

I don't like the changes Pontiac made for the GTO. They basically just stuck a Grand Am front end on it as a way for pontiac executives to 'mark their territory'. Nothing to do with improving the looks, just ego. Interesting example of what's still wrong at GM.

PS - Here's something you might like: Dick Harrell Camaro

Sorry, not especially. The rim's are crapy and the tires are kidney crunchers. The hood is nice because it is not only functional, but it is not bland like the Holden, and the front end looks nasty, like a muscle car should....

Well, there are only going to be thirty made. I suspect you can probably order any rim and tire combo you want. I figured you'd like it because it's definitely 'in your face!'

And you are right about the looks, no sleeper there. I would like to the the back too. I definately like it more than the current rebadged Monero...
