O.K., so there we were cruisin at 125mph with the windows down in my '79 Z28.(not nearly stock) One of the guys in the back seat says "cop coming on your six!" I checked the rearview, sure enough a car is pulling up on me. But it isn't a cop. A very black 1978 Trans Am pulls up next to me,smiles ,waves to follow,(yeah right)and just pulls away like he wasn't even on the gas to catch up! Ipushed my big block to the speedo stop at 130,but with 4 guys in the car that was it! I watched that t/a just get faster as it got farther away! Sure sounds just like your car! Thanks for bringing back the memory. We were headed to Great Lakes Dragway(Union Grove,Wisc.)on that Friday night.Sure took the starch out of my 13.60 run that night!

Life: be in it !

So here I am several years ago on my hour commute on I-12 in Lousiana crusing at 87 or so passing someone doing a respectable 85 in a 70. Lots of folks drive these speeds on this road, but tailgating me at 90 is just plain rude, especially when I am actively passing someone. This Mercedes 300 is bearing down on my 95 Z28 with some mods. Well I just decided to see how much of a hurry he was in as I accelerated to 110 without changing lanes. There he was on the bumper. Well, lets see if he likes 140 better... Hmmm he's still there so I pull to the right lane and he actually tries to pass me as I put the hammer down to 155 and he suddenly vanishes in my rearview at night. Shame too, cause I know I had more pedal, even if I didnt have more speedo. It was the fastest I ever drove and the fastest top end challenge I ever had. Glad I won, but dont want to do it again really. What he didnt know is I had connections and might be able to skate if caught, but thats a pretty gamble. They usually take you directly to jail at those speeds.

Great pics..real balls runnin with what looked like "s" rated tires!...a few years back a late 80's/early 90's "built to the hilt" mustang was running the Silver state challenge and started to have his "z" rated comp ta's start to de-laminate..seems he wasnt running tires rated for the weight and constant high speeds 180+..a lot of competitors found out it was one thing to be able to zing up to 180+..another to make a car/engine/tires last for the 100 miles of the race course..the previous year a doctor and his wife entered a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa..they were given an exemption to run "v" rated tires as that was what the 86 had from the factory..the couple had a tire fail at 175 mph..the car left the road and cartwheeled..the engine broke free and hit the wife as they were thrown from the car (they had full racing harnesses) she was killed instantly..he had major injuries ; but did survive...

Heres a video of running up through the gears in the Silver State run up to 147mph.
StartingLine
We maintained that speed for the next 82 miles. When we slowed down to 100mph for the narrows, it seemed like I was going 30mph. They call it getting speed drunk, and they were right.
Heres the video of the narrows. You can here me saying 'I could have gone a lot faster' and then Bill saying 'OH S&*T' on a couple of turns:
narrowsssccat100mph

Ok guys, check this: 135 MPH in a '89 2.6 V6 Firechicken w/ a K & N. That was all the poor girl had (Not to mention I blew a big chunk of the exhaust manifold off the next day)

"the first year it was held the winner was a 1969 Z-28! a Z in name only..it had an aluminum Donovan 540 cube engine and nascar style frame/cage..it was called big red..I have a video of the race with the Z going by at 220 mph! a lot of horsepower to overcome that brick-like aerodynamics..Id love to build a 1970 trans am replica to run; but high mph=$$$$"

First off I believe that given enough room a RAIV
could run 160+ mph for a short period of time.

I personally was in a crappy POS Mopar Duster with
a 360 engine (in the back seat) with three other guys and we were over 150 mph on a stretch of the I-94 expressway near Benton Harbor, Michigan.

You never saw one guy say so many prayers in so
short of a time in your life. Took several miles
to get up there too. Fastest I have ever been in
a car on the street with POS tires.

Reference the quote above:

I am familiar with BIG RED!

That car destroyed the competition for several
years and it truly was a 200 mph+ average speed
road racer. It was able to run at those speeds due to the NASCAR chassis structure and the MANY
heat exchangers built into the systems on the car.

Heat is the big killer for running at speed for
any period of time.

By the way, the Herb Adams Silver Birds. I have
a friend who wants to sell Herb's last and best
Pontiac powered fuel injected Silver Bird.

Anyone interested in a true Pontiac race car with
a history? Car presently may have a SB Chevy in
it or no engine. I sold the guy a raw 366 steel
crank forging a few years ago so he could put the
car back as a Pontiac powered vehicle.

Let me know.

Tom V.

Hey Tom..love your license plate! The plate on my '78 ta is "YRUSLOW" Any idea on how much $$$ for the silverbird? How smooth was that I-94? bet that old duster was really bouncin up front at that speed.. boy, if you werent religious before the 150+ dash you were during!!!...before I built my 1978 ta; I had a cali smog special 78 ta with 2.41 gears and a 403 engine..even with no cat converter and open scoop that olds would not/could not go over 125..it hit the proverbial runners wall..one time on a Trans am club run we were on a nice straight stretch of road apx 10 milse dead straight..I'm in the lead cruising at about 70 when I look in my side mirror to see a big Chevy truck coming up fast..hmm fresh meat I thought..I floor it and pull ahead burying my stock 100 mph speedo..I look exspecting the chevy to be a speck..BUT NOOO..he is right alongside me..the crazed biker lookin guy driving the truck has a real grin on his face..he proceeds to PULL AHEAD and accelerate!!!my speedo is pointing straight down and this guy is pullin me!!! well come to find out this guy entered the original cannonball run with this truck..if you look at the Brock Yates book you can see a picture of "Mad dogs" truck..he didnt win the cannonball, but he was awarded the "Friend of OPEC award" and was credited for out running the CHP at 130+!!! he had a real built big block and a 100+ gallon fuel tank in the bed of the truck..soon after I sold the brick and started building the other 78..never got the chance to run him again though...

Nice car! Baer brakes,16" american racing wheels..life is good! this is the same color as my ta except mine has no decals..you know stealth....WELL..The guy who built my RAIV for me is selling me his 1970 base firebird with my old engine in it!..this car is going to be the basis of my ungodly bordering on insane 70 ta replica nascar style bonneville runner..I dont want to butcher up a real 70 ta so this will do nicely..my friend Ken Crocie formally of HO Racing wants to come on board..so it should be interesting...with the new blocks and new hi-po heads available I dont have to worry about damaging vintage Pontiac parts..my goal is to have the fastest (not quickest) street legal Trans am..AND it has to pass smog..here in Nevada we get screwed by association being so close to Cali..almost as stringent smog laws.. This will be a fun and mostly $$$ task..STAYED TUNED!!

I love driving fast, but getting older so self preservation is getting the better of me. Those speeds are just insane even in modified cars. Shortley after I finished the restoration on my 64 Lemans, stock motor with a tripower instead of the 2bbl, I did get it to 110mph on a short stretch of a two lane highway with my niece and her boyfriend in the back, showing off a little, but I shut it down even though it still had plenty left. Other than the tripower everything else is stock, tires, drum brakes (luckily I didn't have to use them), steering box. Haven't been that fast since and probably not again, just wanted to see want it would do, and that was fast enough for me.

Nice lookin car and engine Halfway! bet you surprise some un-suspecting people with what lurks under the hood!! I really dont know what the import guys are thinking sometimes when they pull alongside and start to rev their "bumble bee exhaust" next to me..ususally I'll beat them at the "stop light grandprix" crosswalk to crosswalk and that shuts them up..gee..something about cubic inches+torque= severe beating
