I've got one pair of NOS vent covers (part #'s 23 and 24 it looks like) but I'm keeping them. I have a few used pairs of the same I pulled from donor's if you need a pair. They aren't cracked (one is painted however). I have no idea what they may be worth, but I'm flexible, especially to help a PY board member with one of these red-headed stepchildren.

As far as the solenoid assembly goes, I believe it is the same configuration as used on the '74 GTO (and possibly the early 70's ram-air Trans-Am's).

Aren't the vent covers specific to the Ram Air system?

The covers I have are already mounted on the scoops. They're closed and were what was on every NACA/NASA (whichever is correct) hood.

NACA is the correct designation.

I have a pair of the scoops that are in very good shape. Tom V.

That's what I always believed, Rick. But more and more people insist NASA is ok too (BAH!).

I was looking more for the parts shaded in gray. The rest I have or isn't too hard to find, although the air cleaner bases are getting pricey.

The majority of parts not shaded in gray are quite common, and used on other GM models. The shaded parts are the muther..

I always thought it was NACA only as well. I even thought folks were stupid to call it NASA. I then saw a 75' Pontiac sales brochure that clearly stated NASA. Also Tim from the GA registery pointed that out too.

NASA? NACA? Sure, either one is o.k. by me.

Regarding part # 8, I think it was made of "unobtanium". I know of 3 complete systems that exist, and have only seen one in person. The 3 I'm speaking of are on my friend Phil Griffith's car, Tom Goad's wagon, and I've heard a guy in Arizona has one on his car, but I haven't confirmed it.

A guy from NJ named Mark Nouhan tried to reproduce these systems about 12 years ago, but he never got enough interest in it. Each complete setup was going to be around $500, and the lid (#8) was going to made from fiberglass (instead of an injection molded plastic-type material like the originals). He needed a minimum order of 100 setups (I ordered 2 for myself) and couldn't get enough to make it economically feasible. Apparently around 1990 there weren't enough people that were POCI members that cared enough about reproducing quite possibly the rarest ram air package Pontiac ever developed. It was in Smoke Signals where Mark advertised it.

What would you guys say if I picked up where Mark left off? I have a complete package I'm sure Phil would allow use for a mold. Maybe I should place some ads to see how much interest I would get and then see about getting something made? Of course it would probably only consist of the main pieces (part #'s 8, 9, 18, 19). Whatdya' think?

Other stories/rumors I've heard:
A '73 GTO in Minnesota has a functional system. The picture is in the GA Registry photo album.
Someone told a story about a '73 GTO in a California junkyard with the system that was immediately snatched up.
A Mr. Kennedy from MA supposedly got part #8 out of GM engineering.
Does Mr. Nouhan own one too? I don't think anybody knows the whereabouts of Mr. Nouhan.
The original owner of Phil's car was going to make his own, I wonder if he made drawings?

I'd buy the system if someone reproduced them. I'd work on a reproduction myself if I had access to the parts. I think there is more interest now than there was 10 years ago. I think fiberglass for the top and aluminum for the metal part would be one way to go. I know a guy that does injection molding pretty cheap, but making a mold would probably be like $10K unless we know a machinist.

I would be interested in a RA setup. I have considered doing a one off for myself out of sheetmetal. It wouldn't look like factory and would be less complex (no solenoid open/close flaps etc...). I'm not real concerned with a factory appearance as long as it looks good. Let me know what you come up with.

NASA? NACA? Sure, either one is o.k. by me.

Well, I know Horst is heavily connected with the registry. I know Rick would be interested in at least one. I'll talk to Phil and see how he feels about it. I don't think he would mind, the car sits most of the time, and he trusts me (LOL).

The original owner of Phil's car (Jack Hoffman) got part #8 from a friend of his at GM engineering back in the early 70's. Everything else he got over the parts counter in the early 70's.

I'll start checking into the feasibility of it over this winter, and see how many units we have to sell to make it worthwhile.

Mr. Nouhan borrowed the ram air setup from Tom Goad.

You're right, the interest is higher now. I'm sure that HPP and PE could provide some coverage of development of such a project.

I'd guess one might be able to sell 50 or so units if they were $500. You would probably sell 100+ if they were $300-$400. To keep the price down you'd have to try to do much of the work yourself or find volunteers .

I tried to order the rare parts around 1980 and all were discontinued. I understand they were available only for a short time.

$500 is what I'll shoot for. Still need to find out how many would be interested AND how much set-up cost is going to be. Will probably take several months of investigative work.

Horst, not sure if you say the current issue of Pontiac Enthusiast but John Sawruk has an article aboutr 72-74 GTO secrets. One of which states the following:

"Some 73 GTO's and Grand Ams have a working NACA(NASA) duct hood system. These are service parts, installed after the cars left the production line. It was intended to use this system in production, but we could not pass the Federal noise test with the setup as it was designed."

Not sure if it helps any but I thought it was funny to see what you're talking about in PE!
