I certainly know the name - wish I'd known the man. RIP Joe.

RIP Joe Mondello, I was fortunate to have been able to meet and talk to him last year here in Crossville, Tn. He treated me like he had known me for years. We will miss you.

I have this vision of Joe pulling up to the front gate in his Oldsmobile, blipping the throttle and yelling, "Everybody move aside. God wants a ride in my Olds. I already scared the HELL out of the Devil". He was an Icon amongst Icons. It reminds us that as we get older we will lose more and more of those Icons. But when t's our turn, look at the resources we'll have. RIP Joe. Mark L

Got a call from Joe a couple of years back. He was a big supporter. He loved RAVs in boats! I talked to Nick Arias about him and Nick says he was one of the best!

He will be missed. I have some friends who were real close to him and one thing is for sure, he LOVED to teach people. He would show anyone willing to listen how to port heads and explain why he did things the way he did. He didn't keep all his secrets and take them to the grave like so many other experts. I have always had a soft spot for Olds and one reason was because of the "Mondello prepped" engines I saw run some nice numbers. R.I.P. Joe.

Sad news. My girl and me went to his place in Paso Robles in 1994, it was our first time in America. Was looking for parts for my 63 Olds. He was such a nice person, showed us around the place took us for a drive in his 442, gave t-shirts. What a generous and knowledgable man, a true loss. I'll never forget his friendlyness.

Old Joe started porting in the 50s, ported nearly ALL the champions in the 60s then found a niche with 442s and his cylinder head school. I loved to watch his Fiat altered

I just returned about an hour ago from Crossville TN and Mr. Mondello's viewing. An 850 mile trip but I had to go. Lots of well wishers and representation from every form of racing you can imagine. I had the pleasure to meet and spend some time with Calvin Hill who also made the trip in. A quick walk through the shop today revealed much more Pontiac work in the shop than Olds stuff. That may surprise some folks on this board. I once asked Joe the obvious question, "Why Olds". He said Hurst was getting more involved with the 442's and the Olds heads really needed some help. Joe often went where his talents were the most sorely needed. Of course the engines with the most to gain from his head work would bring additional work to him. In the last several years, Joe was carefully watching the resurgence of the traditional Pontiac engine while Olds work continued to decline. He was really energized by the passion and innovation in our hobby. Ever since his induction to the Drag Racing Hall of Fame in the same class with Arnie Beswick, the two had appeared together many times and Arnie was always giving Joe an earful about all things Pontiac. I was in touch with Arnie several times Friday and Saturday and he was also planning to make the trip to Crossville but was down with the flu. He sounded pretty bad on the phone.
Joe will have nice send off and Mary has been surrounded by friends and family all weekend. He will be flown to LA Sunday or Monday and there will be a viewing, mass and final internment near LA with his parents. I am sure many of his west coast friends and family members will be in LA next week. For anyone interested, the IHRA did one heck of a nice obit on their web site. We have also posted a short rememberence on grocerygetterwagon.com. R.I.P Joe. |

What a legacy to leave behind. While many are only out there to make the short buck or to get as much out of people as quickly as they can, this man devoted his life to helping others learn and giving back as much as he received. If only there were more like him. Keep his legacy in mind as you live your life.
