Sounded great with the new block installed in the car and ran very well.
Amazing how well those guys can recover from a bad engine deal quickly. Tom V.

Not sure if its different for fuel cars but we were getting .96- .97 60ft. If Eric can get the 60ft down he is The re. It's pulling very hard on the high end for sure... I assume its in the clutch set up..

Back home from the Norwalk event. Obviously, we are happy with the performance of the Boss Bird. Friday started out with a fairly heavy load of chaos as some who were there observed. First warm-up on nitro the engine sounded lousy, would not idle and had crazy variations in exhaust temperatures and a dead #7 cylinder. We worked late into the evening and corrected all the issues. Dead #7 was a damaged exhaust push rod and broken exhaust rocker arm adjuster as well as stretched attaching bolts to the Jesel bar. We had just enough parts to fix all this stuff. The new valve springs, although we think they are working great are really stressing the Jesel bar and fasteners. They are working loose every time we run the engine. 450 lb. seat pressure and 1120 lb. open are really punishing these parts. The rest of the issues were all related to our previous blower explosion. The manifold top had twisted and bowed creating vacuum leaks we couldn't detect on alcohol but showed up right away on nitro. Lots of new gaskets and RTV solved the issues at least for this week. The rest of the event, the engine, driver, crew and everything on the car was flawless.
It was nice to see and talk to many of you on the forum. If I seemed distracted or not able stay with every conversation, I apologize. It's hard to stay focused on my #1 job which is to keep Eric safe. I have various lists I work off of and my crew only work together 3-4 times a year so we have to constantly cross-check each other to make sure everything gets done. It was great to have a chance to actually watch some racing Saturday night for the first time in years. Seeing and touching Jack's DOHC Mickey Thompson block land speed record engine was really special. It's incredible and I will post some pic's soon. Arnie Beswick was at the line for both runs of our car and was pleased with the performance. He can be a harsh critic. He said it sounded great and was all smiles. I will be removing the engine for complete teardown and inspection in the next few weeks. I have to mention that All Pontiac went to extraordinary lengths to provide a reinforced solid aluminum engine block for us. This is no small project. In less than 1 year this block went from a conversation to a running engine in a nitro funny car. Think about that. Work done in Virginia, Arizona, Michigan and California. Blueprints, pattern changes, special fasteners, special aluminum alloy, special post casting processing, HIP process, special machining operations. All done to provide a really strong aluminum block we and others can afford. When that block showed-up I was determined to have it ready for Norwalk, no matter what. Look forward to developing it further. Last edited by mgarblik; 08-07-2016 at 09:48 PM. |

Wish you could have been there. Your work with nitro in the Pontiac engine gave us a shot of courage to jump in ourselves.
