The factory rods are bent to stay lower and away from the tunnel (vs. the A-body rods that run higher). I attached the illustrations for the 68 assembly manual to show the differences.

Anyone know the whereabouts of these??? We'd buy a complete 4-speed setup if necessary.

Here are the rotated pictures. I take it the first picture is the A body linkage and the second picture is the B body linkage?

Stuart - Yes, you are correct. The B-body 4-spd linkages (rods/levers) are much lower. You would think the B-body tunnel would be huge compared the A & F bodies, but they are tighter(!) and the Competition Plus hardware hits the tunnel. Dan would rather find the correct factory linages than beat up the virgin sheet metal.

Does anyone know if 65/66 4-speed linkages are the same, or similar???

That is surprising, I wouldn't have guessed that.

Early Firebird & '69 Camaro with factory Hurst shifter also mounted very low, but even further back in relation to back of Muncie 4spd tail housing.

Default 1966 Pontiac Big car Muncie long tail-shaft 4 speed hurst linkage

These photos are from the year 2002 so needless to say all of these parts are long gone.

This was way back when I used to go to at least 8 or 10 big swap meets per summer.

One summer I decided to try and collect up the rods to go with a Pontiac factory Hurst shifter that I had. (1965-66 Big car shifter, w/ bucket seats.)

As much of the GM linkage that I could ever find: and this was after a year & a 1/2 worth of time searching.

If all else fails, it doesn't look like it would be hard to reproduce the B body rods. Start with some A/F body rods and weld in a section, bend to shape, beadblast, and paint/plate as required. Nobody would know the difference.

Thanks Pete! I believe Dan has talked to you recently regarding shifter parts and shared the same 'hens-teeth' availability...they aren't too common.

Mike, That is what Dan is planning on doing. Between him and Scott, they have a bunch of linkage arms and levers to make something work and look kosher...good hearing from you (back to working on the GT-37, btw...but slow going on the dash rebuild).

Marxjunk, Thanks for the offer, sounds like a cool car! Love to see some pictures of it.

'67-68 manual linkages setup is different than the '65-66 setup. As someone who had an A-body shifter setup on a '67-68 car, it will bind and jam regularly on you in the 2-3 shift and leave you stuck in traffic between gears if you're without tools so definitely make an effort to find the correct linkages. They are out there, I know of a half dozen sets that guys are absolutely refusing to part with on the "just in case" front... I do believe that someone with the right know-how could fabricate the parts up as described (I am not that someone sadly...).

That said, this thread is the coolest thread on this site and I keep coming back to it. I can't wait to see it back in action and driving.

Dan got the carpet trimmed and fitted and the bench seat tracks test fitted too.

Good news to report...Dan had the linkages and levers after all...misplaced in a different box. So, the trans and shifter are getting ready to be installed tomorrow in the upcoming days.

Good news.

Is the transmission bare aluminum, or has it been painted or clear coated?

Stuart, it's bare aluminum with no coating.

curious on the shifter...looks like 65-6 a-body bench...using it because of the looks? it is a better looking shifter than the 67-8 b-body IMO

Mark, you are right...it isn't the correct shifter. Dan has a picture of a really nice original 68 428 4-spd Ventura he saw at the POCI National Convention a few years ago (Pennsylvania?) and the shifter is straighter, longer with a subtle curve to the rear. This one is definitely an A-body shifter that came with the car. What it is from, we have no clue. The Catalina had an aftermarket Hurst Competition Plus shifter when Dan got it, so the original shifter is MIA. So, the hunt is back on for a correct bench seat shifter....Oh! The anguish!
