Default Door Jam Paint Advice

Below are some pics of my door jams, they were painted in SS maybe 20 years ago. Should I strip all this off before painting with BC/CC? Scuff and seal with epoxy primer? Leave them be? They still shine, color is good ... no problems other than the hinge area.

If they still shine good I think it depends on the level of restoration. Looks like it is pretty torn down which means everything else is going to look new. While they look good now I’m not sure they will look as good next to new paint, interior, etc. if the budget allows it I would probably paint them since it is so accessible

You've gone this far with making everything the best you can, so if you don't paint them now, you'll be kicking yourself later

I would be taking most of it down pretty far and prime with epoxy, then paint when body is ready. Your new paint will adhere only as good as what is underneath. Why risk new paint.

They are the typical Angle grinder mounted fiber abrasive disks ... got them on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01B8GQ0BW

Most of them are probably the same more or less. They remove paint and rust very very quickly, last a reasonable amount of time. If using on just paint, on smooth metal, they will last quite a while. They certainly remove it quickly.

What does them in is snagging them on sharp edges, chews them up quick. You have to keep the rotation direction constantly in mind and if you have an edge make sure to have the rotation going off the edge, not into it .... will also try to yank the grinder out of your hands when it snags. Doesn't produce much heat just removing paint. Rust, undercoat etc will generate a bit more.

I can't advise one way or the other for paint removal on the exterior of large body panels yet. But for areas like door jams, firewalls etc. they are excellent.

Unless you’re building a show piece just paint the A pillar and leave the rest as is if it looks good to you. Fact is with doors and hinges in place I don’t see the need to paint anything just for the sake of painting something.

If it looks as good as the pics, I would put my time and $$$ elsewhere.
Just my 2 cents.

Ah. You should've asked me then. Just leave it in primer.

Paint the hinge area with a jam gun in base. After cleaning and epoxy primer( tape it off). Then clean it all with wax and grease remover and clear coat it. This is easy and cheaper. You will then use round foam tape if you paint car with doors on.

So you are saying I can clear over the areas of SS that are in good shape? That would make things easier.

Yes you can clear coat over single stage if its old enough ( over a year)
clean it well with a VOC based wax and grease remover ( not the soap stuff in a plastic bottle. I use Kleen strip wax and grease remover. I buy it at Napa.
May want to lightly scuff the paint with a "WHITE" scuffy pad.. yes WHITE, they are xtra fine. Then wipe with wax and grease remover, blow off, use a tac cloth and mask up and paint the clear coat.
