In almost any diagnostic situation, there are really about 5 things that are easy to check and will tell you a lot, and people today aren't trained by their dads like old timers were on how to check things. The five easy things to check (some on even computerized cars where you might never need to check anything) are:
1, check for fuel to the carb, general carb linkage and choke operation and whether moving the pedal squirts some fuel into the intake
2. spark to the plugs
3, compression in the cylinders and plug condition while doing that
4, timing
5, vacuum

Those five will point you in a general direction and will eliminate a lot of potential things you need to look at.

Thanks DMAC, we all know this stuff but having it written down to look at when flustered over the engine not running is really helpful. Thanks.
