The change jar builds up quick when you're throwing 1 and 2 dollar coins in it.

Check this page for the weight of copper vs. zinc pennies.

He obviously had some of both
50 lbs zinc $91
50 lbs copper $73.50

The Loonie nickname sprang from the Loon on the dollar coin, so our quarters
should be called Moose-ee. And the dime should be Boat-ie.

Considering the fools that will over pay, do you know if they would sell a $6.49 item for $6 cash (rounded to nearest dollar) to balance out the overages? Hell no, they won't.

Again, here is my 5 and a 1 in cash. Debit the rest and they pay the card processing fees.

Except for the fact that our "modern" coinage was essentially designed in 1936*, so the Caribou twenty-five cent coin, and Bluenose ten cent coin are just that.
*I believe the test pieces were debued at a numismatic show in Paris in 1936 - in advance to being released for the 1937 calendar year.

Fun fact, as I've understood it, the Canadian "cent" is derived from historic francophone Canadian's term for 1/100th of a dollar;
The term 'penny', 'quarter (dollar)' and, 'dime' are all from 'state-side currency, and just misappropriated when used for our currency... so they actually already have nick names(!)
(look on USA versus Canadian coins and you'll see what I mean)

I had already posted that face value per pound earlier in this thread (in round numbers - $1.80 per pound vs $1.45 per pound).

Seeing as how the copper coins haven't been minted in nearly 40 years, I suspect that the number of pre zinc coins doesn't account for the loss of $4.68 in the total payout.

Maybe the 50+ pounds claimed included the weight of the jar they were in.

So, you're telling me the Canadian Mint is wrong???

If you google "Twonie" - this is what you get:

Quote:
Did you mean: toonie
If you go to dictionary.com - this is what you get:

Quote:
twonie/ (ˈtuːnɪ) /
noun
variant spelling of toonie
If you google "What is the Canadian term for the $2 coin?" - this is what you get:

Quote:
Toonie

The 2-dollar coin, or 'Toonie', as Canadians have named it, features the image of an adult polar bear in early summer on an ice floe. It was designed by wildlife and landscape artist Brent Townsend. The 2-dollar coin was first introduced on February 19, 1996, to replace the 2-dollar bill.
It appears that the rest of the world and the Canadian government believes the correct spelling to be toonie...

Nope. I just recognize how it used to be informally spelled. Honestly, I spell it
toonie just because that's the official way, but it wasn't always this way.

When I went to my credit union to withdraw $1000 they asked how I wanted the cash, I said in quarters, the teller said I would have to come into the lobby to get the quarters because she couldn't send them thru the drive up. There's no coin shortage!

I’m not a fan of $1 and $2 coins. Years ago, I spent some time in Japan. At the time, I got my caffeine fix from sodas - I’d put the smallest Bill they made (1,000 yen - 10 bucks at the time), and end up with a soda and what seemed like 4 pounds of change. If my memory is correct, I had the same experience in Britain and with the Euro, too.

Change in my pockets sucks - give me foldable cash!

Exactly.

That's why about everyone has a 'change jar'.
Don't know of anyone having a 'bill jar' for any extra bills in their billfold.

How about the paper Canadian 25 cent note? I have 2 of them. 1 from 1929, and 1 from 1935.

Banks don’t need coins, they need to stop LYING and being used to persuade ppl of the farce shortage.
Bags & bags of coins go into the brinks truck , sent to the central banks in town, counted and Redistributed To the Banks in paper bound roll.

I Used to work for the banking industry (USB-Wells Fargo) and Local Utility and know 100% ALL about the life “cycle” of currencies & coinages.

The three Mints MFG easily enough coins , production data is public information, and Always have been able to supply the needs to circulate the volumes of merchants .
That MFG data to show the minting quantity has always been able to produce. Now with most ppl using CC and slowing sales in things, there is more of a glut available with their reduced call and usage.
No, there is NO Shortage whatsoever.
It’s a “mysterious “ perceived shortage when LESS call for them exists!
Volumes of coins, and a proper volume amounts as Always has Been, don’t just “SUDDENLY” disappear into a dark hole, they’re somewhere or someone is Lying about their whereabouts .

Seeing more stores asking for exact payments, if paying in cash.

Walmart has discontinued cash advance at their checkouts in one town close to us, while another Walmart in another town within 20 miles of the ones that discontinued cash advances hasn't limited their checkouts????? WTH....

I'm doubting there is any money crunch, paper or coin, I'm just not sure why some are stoking the fire that there is?

Wink counting pennies

I think misterp266 may have the correct explanation.

Actually, I would like to have/buy at face value all the pennies you have. I am an amateur collector in my retirement years and it gives something to do. Shipping can be problematic, though.

I don't completely trust those machines in the banks, and certainly will not use those machines in Walmart.

There doesn't seem to be a change shortage here, at least not where I work. We did for about a week and the employee's were bringing in change so we wouldn't have to deal with the crabby customers over change.

Is it OK to highjack my own thread ?
My internet went out last Friday. It took Frontier a week to get out here to find the problem. It was 4000 ft away and took 15" to fix.
Anyway I'm back.

Guess my old needle point bathroom scale ain't to accurate.
But I had enough pennies to buy a new coffee maker.
It's all good.

And who cares about foreign coins ?

As u were......................
